Chapter 15 - The Alliance of the Iron Gate

The smoke from the brief skirmish at the South Chicago rail depot cleared into the damp evening air as the flashing red and blue lights of local police sirens wailed in the distance—not corrupt municipal units, but the independent tactical division that now answered directly to Dominic’s restructured syndicate.
Director Heinrich Vance, stripped of his communications gear, his encrypted satellite phone, and his arrogant European composure, was zip-tied and forced onto the back bench of one of the support SUVs under Frank Moretti’s watchful eye. The Syndicate of the Alps’ local operation had been utterly dismantled in less than twenty minutes, their high-frequency hardware seized, and their fraudulent contracts shredded on the ballast stones of the rail yard.
Dominic stood beside the open passenger door of his vehicle, watching as Moretti secured the perimeter. The adrenaline of the firefight had faded, leaving behind that quiet, unbreakable aura of supreme authority that defined him. He turned his head and looked at Norah, who stood a few feet away, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead, her breathing steady, her eyes bright with the intoxicating triumph of total victory.
Dominic closed the distance between them, his gaze softening into something fiercely tender. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing against her knuckles where she still clutched the heavy iron wrench she had carried into the fray.
“You realize,” Dominic said, his voice a low, gravelly murmur, “that most men would pay a fortune for an enforcer who can both audit a corrupt federal judge and drop a two-ton shipping container on an international cartel.”
Norah looked up at him, a radiant, triumphant smile spreading across her face. She let the heavy wrench drop to the gravel with a dull thud, no longer needing a weapon to prove her strength. “I’m not an enforcer, Dominic. I’m a strategist.”
“You’re my strategist,” Dominic corrected softly, his hand moving from her fingers to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing tenderly across her cheekbone. “And my partner. In everything.”
For a long moment, the chaos of the rail yard, the shadows of the international cartels, and the ghosts of the past simply melted away. They were no longer the hunted waitress and the feared mafia boss; they were two people who had forged an unshakeable empire out of the ashes of cruelty and corruption.
“What happens next?” Norah asked quietly, her eyes searching his face. “Heinrich was just a regional director. Zurich won’t let this go easily.”
Dominic’s expression hardened into a lethal, confident grin. “Let them try. We own the ports. We own the ledgers. And we own this city.” He paused, pulling her just a fraction closer against the chill of the evening wind. “Besides, tomorrow we have a much more important appointment.”
Norah raised an eyebrow, a teasing spark in her eyes. “Oh? And what appointment is that?”
“A very quiet dinner,” Dominic said, a warm, genuine smile breaking through his serious facade. “Just the two of us. At a restaurant of your choosing. And I promise you—nobody will ever ask you to kneel.”

Norah laughed, a bright, genuine sound that echoed softly against the towering iron gates of the rail yard. She wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his broad chest as the distant Chicago skyline glittered across the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
They turned away from the wreckage, walking side by side toward the waiting vehicle as the city’s shadows parted before them, ready for whatever new horizon awaited beyond the iron gate.
