Chapter 26 - The Unlocking of the Safe

The private study on the second floor of the Vance estate smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and the faint, lingering antiseptic of corporate neglect. For years, Julian had treated this room as his private sanctuary—a place where he could dictate terms, manipulate markets, and bury the evidence of his mounting failures behind heavy mahogany doors and biometric locks.

Now, the biometric scanner on the wall beside the heavy wall safe blinked a steady, baleful red: *ACCESS DENIED.*

"He changed the root administrative codes yesterday afternoon," Sarah said, her fingers hovering nervously over the numeric keypad as she knelt before the reinforced steel door. "When the board suspended him, his profile was automatically flagged, but he managed to override the manual lockout before security escorted him out of the headquarters."

Margaret stood leaning on her cane a few feet away, watching with the cold, detached precision of a seasoned surgeon observing an operation. Clara stood beside her, holding a slim, silver laptop equipped with the forensic auditing software they had spent months mastering.

"He thinks code is god," Margaret remarked quietly, her eyes scanning the dark walnut bookshelves that lined the walls. "He forgets who bought the lumber."

"Is there a physical backup?" Clara asked, her fingers dancing across the laptop keys as she plugged a heavy black cable into a concealed port beneath the desk. "Old systems like this—especially the ones Arthur installed back in the nineties—usually had a master mechanical override. A physical keyhole hidden behind the millwork."

Sarah’s eyes widened. She turned her head sharply toward the base of the safe, where a decorative carved oak molding ran along the floorboards. "The ivy carving," she breathed. "Arthur always said his designs had hidden doors because he didn't trust electricity."

With trembling fingers, Sarah reached down and pressed the center of the carved wooden leaf. With a soft, mechanical click, a small panel sprang open, revealing a dusty, thumb-sized keyhole that hadn't seen the light of day in over a decade.

From the pocket of her tailored cardigan, Margaret drew a small, heavy brass key on a braided silver ring—a key she had kept hidden in the lining of her medical boot every single day since she left the estate.

She knelt slowly, wincing slightly as her healing ankle took the pressure, but she didn't ask for help. She inserted the brass key into the hidden lock. It resisted for a fraction of a second, fighting against years of accumulated dust and neglect, before Margaret gave it a firm, authoritative twist.

*Clunk.*

The heavy steel door of the safe swung outward, releasing a puff of cold, stagnant air that carried the scent of old paper and high-stakes secrets.

Inside, neatly stacked in rows of crisp, manila folders, lay the financial skeleton of Julian’s entire empire: offshore bank statements, notarized falsified deeds, and a single, thick black ledger labeled in Julian’s own handwriting: *Vance Holdings – Contingency Plan.*

Sarah reached in with a trembling hand and pulled the black ledger out, placing it gently on the mahogany desk before Margaret.

Margaret didn't open it immediately. She looked down at the name inscribed on the cover—the name of her son, who had traded his birthright for a hollow crown.

"Open it, Margaret," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with anticipation. "Let's see what he was really hiding."
