Chapter 26 - THE TURN OF THE TIDE

"No! Leave her alone!" I roared, fueled by a primal, desperate fury that momentarily transcended the physical pain and the crushing weight of the men holding me down.
With a burst of adrenaline born from pure terror, I slammed my heel backward into the shin of the mercenary pinning my legs, connecting with a sickening crunch of bone. The man yelled in pain, his grip loosening just enough for me to violently wrench my shoulder free, twist around, and drive my elbow upward into the jaw of the second guard standing over me. He staggered backward, tumbling into the deep snowdrift.
"Shoot him! Stop him!" Miller barked, his calm, bureaucratic demeanor instantly shattering into panic as he reached for his own sidearm.
I didn't wait. I lunged forward across the snow, tackling Miller around the waist before he could clear his holster, sending both of us crashing hard into the frozen earth. The tactical pistol I had dropped earlier lay half-buried in the snow just a foot away from my outstretched hand.
Miller punched me viciously in the ribs, knocking the wind from my lungs, but I ignored the searing pain, lunging blindly through the snow until my freezing fingers wrapped around the textured grip of the weapon.

I whipped around, pointing the barrel straight at Miller’s chest just as he leveled his own gun at my head.
"Drop it, Marcus! You won't pull that trigger!" Miller yelled, his eyes wide with genuine fear for the first time.
"Watch me," I growled, my finger tightening on the trigger with absolute, unwavering resolve.
Before either of us could fire, the distant, screaming wail of high-performance sirens pierced the howling mountain wind, cutting through the blizzard like a blade of light. From the highway above, a convoy of unmarked black SUVs with flashing red and blue strobes burst through the snowbanks, their heavy tires kicking up blinding plumes of powder as they barreled directly down the access road toward the clearing.
"Federal Marshal Service! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads, now!" a booming, amplified voice echoed across the ravine through a loudspeaker.

Miller’s face drained of all color. He looked from the oncoming convoy back to my steady weapon, realizing instantly that his high-level protection network had just been overridden by a higher, uncompromised branch of federal oversight—one that had been secretly tracking his corrupt cell for months.
