Chapter 19 - The Visitor in the Dark

The headlights of the black sedan glared against our front windows, casting long, distorted shadows across the porch and instantly silencing the joyful commotion inside the house. Ryan’s body went completely rigid beneath my arm, his protective instincts flaring to life in a fraction of a second as he stepped in front of me, his hand sliding instinctively toward his pocket. The driver’s side door of the sedan creaked open, and a tall figure stepped out into the biting wind, pulling the collar of a heavy trench coat up against the coastal chill. Even in the dim, flickering amber glow of our porch light, the silhouette was unmistakably familiar. It wasn't Marcus Thorne, and it wasn't Victor Vance. It was Julian Vance, fresh off a transatlantic flight from London, looking exhausted, disheveled, and carrying a battered leather briefcase that looked like it had been through a war zone. "Julian?" Ryan called out, lowering his guard just a fraction as his cousin walked briskly up the wooden steps, his breath pluming in the freezing air. Julian didn't offer his usual polished, charming smile; his face was tight with a grim, urgent tension that made my stomach drop instantly. "I didn't mean to crash your little family gathering, cousin," Julian said, his voice raspy as he stepped onto the porch and slammed the front door shut against the wind. "But I didn't have a choice. The UK branch of the holding company just uncovered a secondary trust—one that Victor and Beatrice managed to keep hidden from the SEC and the forensic accountants." Ryan frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. "What kind of trust? We liquidated everything." "Not everything," Julian said, dropping his heavy briefcase onto the porch bench and popping the brass clasps with frantic fingers. He pulled out a thick stack of international banking documents and shoved them into Ryan’s hands. "It’s a contingency fund domiciled in Zurich, tied to an offshore shell corporation registered under a completely different maiden name. And according to these transfer logs, it was activated three days ago—right after Beatrice visited you here." I stepped around Ryan, my eyes scanning the lines of encrypted routing numbers and wire transfers until a specific name at the bottom of the ledger caught my eye, making my blood run ice cold. The funds weren't being used to rebuild the Vance empire. They were being funneled into a private, high-security legal defense fund—and the primary beneficiary listed on the retainer agreement wasn't Victor or Beatrice. It was a shadowy corporate intelligence firm notorious in European legal circles for orchestrating smear campaigns, asset seizures, and targeted harassment against corporate whistleblowers. Julian looked from Ryan to me, his eyes dark with a grave warning. "They’re not trying to recover their wealth, Ryan," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "They’re using the last of their hidden reserves to hire people who don't play by corporate rules. They’re coming back for you—and this time, they aren't using lawyers."
