Chapter 13 - The Unexpected Visit

Two weeks had passed since my mother stood shivering on my front porch, and the memory of that night had already begun to fade into the background of our peaceful routine. I hadn't heard from her, and frankly, I didn't care to. The closure I felt wasn't accompanied by anger or lingering resentment; it was simply a profound, liberating emptiness where the burden of obligation used to live.
However, the universe, it seemed, was not quite done testing the boundaries of my newly fortified life.
It was a Saturday afternoon, and I was in the garage sorting through some storage boxes while Ethan and Miles played soccer in the backyard. The rhythmic *thump-thump* of their cleats hitting the soccer ball provided a comforting background soundtrack to my chores.
Suddenly, a car engine rumbled loudly down our quiet suburban street—an engine that sounded like a sputtering lawnmower struggling up a hill. A moment later, I heard tires screech to a halt directly in front of our driveway.
I stood up, wiping my hands on a rag, and stepped out of the garage to investigate.
A dented, rust-spotted sedan—a car I recognized immediately as Mark’s pathetic excuse for transportation—was parked awkwardly halfway across our driveway. The driver’s side door swung open with a metallic groan, and out spilled Mark.
He looked worse than he had on the night of the birthday dinner. His hoodie was stained with what looked like grease, his hair was unwashed, and his eyes were bloodshot and erratic. He slammed the car door shut, marched straight up the driveway, and stopped a few feet away from me with his hands clenched into tight fists.
"You think you're real smart, don't you?" Mark spat out, his voice laced with venom.
I didn't flinch. I tossed the rag onto a nearby recycling bin, crossed my arms over my chest, and looked him up and down with absolute boredom. "Can I help you, Mark? Or are you just here to ruin another afternoon with your bad breath?"
"Don't start with me, Clara!" he barked, taking a threatening step forward. "Mom called me yesterday, crying her eyes out. She said you slammed the door in her face like a cold-hearted monster! That’s *our* mother! The woman who put a roof over your head when you were broke and desperate!"
"Let’s get one thing straight, Mark," I said, stepping forward to close the distance between us, my voice chillingly calm. "The only reason I ever lived in that house as an adult was because Mom manipulated me into staying so I could pay her exorbitant bills while you sat on your lazy ass playing video games in the basement. I didn't owe her a dime, and I certainly don't owe you a single word."
Mark’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. He pointed a shaking, accusing finger directly at my face. "You left us to rot! The bank is taking the house next month! They're throwing Mom out on the street! And you're sitting pretty in this nice little suburban box like nothing happened!"
"If Mom loses her house, you have nobody to blame but yourself," I retorted sharply. "You are thirty-four years old, Mark. You haven't held a job for more than three months in the last five years. You stole thousands of dollars from Mom’s savings accounts—yes, I know about that, too—and you expected the rest of the world to keep funding your pathetic lifestyle forever. Well, party’s over."
"You have money!" Mark roared, his voice echoing loudly down the street, causing a neighbor a few doors down to peek out from behind their living room curtains. "You got a $150,000 payout from the settlement! You can easily pay off the back mortgage! You can bail us out right now!"
"Not a chance," I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. "Every single penny of that money is locked away in trust funds for my sons' education. It will never, *ever* touch your hands."

Mark let out a feral growl of pure rage. For a terrifying second, his eyes darted toward the backyard where Ethan and Miles were playing. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.
"You're going to regret this, Clara," he snarled, his voice trembling with malicious intent. "You think you've won? You think you can cut off your own family and walk away scot-free? I'm going to make sure everyone knows what a selfish, manipulative bitch you really are. I'll ruin you."
