Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

By the next morning, the story had made waves within the local business community. News of Julian Vance’s arrest and the collapse of Vance Capital spread quickly through financial circles in Denver.
Grandma didn’t spend another night in Patricia’s house. That same evening, she had Richard book a private suite at a downtown luxury hotel for me, Lily, and herself. For the first time in over a year, I slept in a warm, comfortable bed without the crushing anxiety of rent payments or utility bills hanging over my head.
The following afternoon, Richard Vance met us in the hotel’s private conference room. He laid out a legal and financial strategy that was swift, brutal, and comprehensive.
“Because Patricia and Julian utilized forged documents to access the trust,” Richard explained, “we have filed an emergency motion to seize all personal assets belonging to Patricia Whitmore-Vance to restitution the stolen funds.”
“What assets?” I asked.
“Patricia holds title to a luxury vacation home in Aspen, as well as several private investment accounts,” Richard said. “We have placed a lien on all of them. Within thirty days, $180,000 plus twenty percent interest and legal fees will be deposited into a brand-new, secure trust account in your name only, Sarah.”
Grandma shook her head. “That is only the beginning, Richard.”
She turned to me and took my hands in hers.
“Sarah, I am changing my will,” Grandma announced calmly. “The portion of the estate that was originally designated for Patricia and her children will be permanently revoked and transferred into a irrevocable educational and living trust for Lily.”
I gasped. “Grandma, that’s… that’s millions of dollars!”
“And it belongs to the people who truly deserve it,” Grandma insisted. “Furthermore, I am buying you a home. A real home, in whatever city you choose, so you never have to worry about rent or landlords ever again.”
I couldn't speak. For fourteen months, I had lived in constant survival mode, taking life one agonizing day at a time. Now, in the span of twenty-four hours, the dark cloud that had hovered over my life had completely vanished.

However, the legal battles were far from over. Patricia’s defense attorneys were already preparing a fight, claiming that Patricia had simply acted as an informal loan officer and intended to repay the money. They were aiming for a light plea deal that would keep her out of prison.
Grandma was not about to let that happen.
