Chapter 9 - Justice Delivered

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the atmosphere was electric. Patricia stood trembling next to her attorney, clutching her rosary beads. Julian closed his eyes, praying silently.
“On the first count of Grand Larceny in the First Degree,” the jury foreman read aloud, “we find the defendant, Patricia Whitmore-Vance, guilty.”
Patricia let out a strangled gasp and slumped into her chair.
“On the count of Federal Wire Fraud, we find the defendant, Patricia Whitmore-Vance, guilty.”
“On the count of Forgery in the Second Degree, we find the defendant, Patricia Whitmore-Vance, guilty.”
The foreman turned his paper. “On the count of Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud, we find the defendant, Julian Vance, guilty.”
Two months later, the sentencing hearing took place. The judge showed little mercy.
“The cold-hearted nature of this crime is what shocks this court the most,” the judge declared from the bench. “To steal from a grieving widow and a fatherless baby—not out of desperation, but out of sheer greed and vanity—is a monstrous act. Patricia Whitmore-Vance, I sentence you to seven years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.”
Patricia burst into loud, hysterical sobs as court marshals stepped forward to cuff her.
“Julian Vance,” the judge continued, “for your role in concealing and utilizing stolen funds, I sentence you to three years in federal prison, with eligibility for parole after eighteen months.”
As Patricia and Julian were led out of the courtroom through the side doors, Patricia looked back at Grandma one last time, screaming for forgiveness. But Grandma didn’t budge. She sat tall, her posture regal, her face unreadable. Justice had been served.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded our family, cameras flashing. Grandma stepped up to the microphones, holding my hand tightly on one side, while I held now-fifteen-month-old Lily on the other.
“Today, justice was done,” Grandma told the assembled media smoothly. “Family is not defined by blood; it is defined by love, truth, and loyalty. Anyone who betrays those values is no family of mine.”
