Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Elite

The name *Vance* hung in the air like a curse.
For nearly twenty years, the branch of the family represented by Julian had reigned supreme over the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic, while the branch that bore the shame of "embezzlement" had been erased from the family trees, driven into poverty and obscurity. To hear that name uttered by a catering waitress in the middle of a multi-million-dollar engagement gala wasn't just a scandal—it was an earthquake at the epicenter of New York high society.
"That's a forgery!" Vanessa screamed, her voice bordering on hysteria. She lunged forward, her fingernails clawing at the air like a trapped cat. "She printed that off the internet! She's a fraud! Security, drag her out of here before I have you all fired!"
Neither of the security guards moved an inch. They were paralyzed by the palpable tension radiating from Julian, whose expression had darkened into something resembling a winter storm over the ocean.
Julian ignored Vanessa completely. He took a slow step toward Elena, his eyes searching her face as if trying to decode a language he had forgotten how to read.
"If what you're saying is true," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "then why come here tonight? Why wait seventeen years to bring out a piece of paper? Courts exist. Lawsuits exist."
"Courts require money, Mr. Vance," Elena replied, her gaze meeting his without a single flicker of hesitation. "And when your grandfather was systematically stripped of his patents, his company, and his good name, your family made sure every bank account was frozen, every asset seized under fraudulent liens. By the time my father figured out who had orchestrated the betrayal, he was broken. He spent the rest of his life watching the Sterlings—and your branch of the family—feast on the wealth that rightfully belonged to him, while we couldn't even afford proper medical care."
She paused, letting the heavy truth sink into the marrow of everyone listening.
"He died three months ago, Mr. Vance. And on his deathbed, he didn't ask for revenge. He asked for the truth. He told me that justice delayed is justice denied, but truth revealed is a reckoning."
Arthur Pendelton staggered backward, catching himself against the edge of a mahogany cocktail table. He looked at Vanessa with a gaze full of sudden, crushing horror. "Richard... Richard Sterling didn't just merge with Thomas Vance. He blackmailed him. He used forged signatures to transfer the patents..." Arthur pressed a trembling hand to his chest. "I... I suspected it. I saw the amended ledgers in ninety-five, but Richard threatened my pension... my family..."
"You coward," Julian muttered under his breath, though his eyes never left Elena.
Vanessa’s knees seemed to buckle slightly, but she caught herself against a marble pillar, her chest heaving beneath her silk gown. "Shut up, Arthur! You senile old fool, you're babbling! Julian, don't listen to them! This is a conspiracy! Look at her! She’s wearing a twenty-dollar uniform from a temp agency! She’s a nobody!"
"A nobody?" A smooth, deep voice cut through the commotion from the top of the grand staircase.
Every head turned upward.
Standing on the landing, leaning leisurely against the wrought-iron banister, was a tall man in a midnight-black tuxedo that mirrored Julian’s. He had sharp, aristocratic features, silver-streaked dark hair at his temples, and an air of effortless, terrifying power that commanded the room instantly. It was Marcus Sterling—Vanessa’s older brother and the current CEO of Sterling Global Real Estate.
Marcus took his time walking down the stairs, each step deliberate and heavy, like a executioner approaching the block.
"My dear sister," Marcus said smoothly, a thin, cruel smile playing on his lips, "it’s terribly unbecoming of a future Sterling bride to throw tantrums in public. Especially in front of our most important business partners." He reached the bottom of the landing and cast a lazy glance at Elena, his eyes lingering on her face with a strange mixture of recognition and amusement.
"Marcus!" Vanessa cried out, rushing to his side and grabbing his arm. "Do something! This—this peasant came in here, attacked me, and she’s running some bizarre scam about the company history!"
Marcus patted Vanessa’s hand soothingly, but his eyes remained locked on Elena. "Oh, I don't think it’s a scam, Nessie," he said softly. Then, raising his voice so it echoed off the vaulted ceiling, he addressed the entire room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please accept my apologies for this little... theatrical interruption. Our staff management has clearly failed us tonight. However, since Miss Vance has taken the trouble of crashing our party with her little arts-and-crafts project, let’s not pretend we don't know who she is."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "You know her, Marcus?"
Marcus chuckled, a low, melodic sound that sent a chill down the spines of everyone within earshot. "Of course I do. Everyone in corporate intelligence knows the name Vance. Or should I say... the ghost of Thomas Vance." Marcus took two slow steps toward Elena, stopping just an arm's length away.
"You have your father’s eyes, Miss Vance," Marcus whispered, loud enough for the front rows to hear. "Too bad you have his lack of survival instinct. Walking into the lion's den with a stolen envelope doesn't make you a hero. It makes you trespassing."
Elena tilted her chin up, refusing to shrink back an inch. "Trespassing? Let's see what the police think when they open that envelope, Marcus. Because inside aren't just copies. They’re the original banking slips bearing your father’s signature—the ones he used to pay off the crooked magistrate who signed the eviction orders."
Marcus’s smile didn't fade, but the light in his eyes died instantly, replaced by a dark, predatory gleam.
"You think you hold all the cards, don't you?" Marcus murmured, leaning in close so only she could hear. "You think walking in here with a piece of paper gives you power over empires?"
Before Elena could answer, Marcus raised his voice and signaled the two security guards with a sharp flick of his wrist.
May you like
"Throw her out," Marcus commanded coldly. "And make sure her phone and that envelope stay right here on the floor where they belong."
