Chapter 5 - The Federal Arrival

The weight of the federal marshal unit’s presence settled over the ballroom like an iron blanket. The champagne glasses in the hands of the trembling socialites seemed to rattle against their saucers. No one dared to breathe, let alone whisper.
Chief Prosecutor Robert Miller walked forward with slow, deliberate steps, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the white marble. He bypassed the terrified clusters of elite guests without a single glance, heading straight toward the center of the platform where Marcus, Vanessa, Julian, and Elena stood.
Vanessa’s knees finally betrayed her. She grabbed onto Marcus’s arm so hard her fingernails dug through his custom wool jacket. "Marcus... what is he doing here? Did you invite him? Is this a joke?"
Marcus didn't answer. His face had gone completely rigid, the color draining from his cheeks until he looked almost translucent under the warm glow of the chandeliers. For all his bravado, for all the billions of dollars backing his real estate empire, the sight of the Chief Federal Prosecutor walking unannounced into a private family gala meant only one thing: the house of cards wasn't just leaning—it was collapsing.
Prosecutor Miller stopped two paces away from Elena. To the absolute shock of everyone in the room, the veteran lawman gave a slight, respectful nod of his head toward the young waitress.
"Miss Vance," Miller said, his deep, resonant voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. "I trust everything is proceeding according to plan?"
Elena offered a calm, polite nod in return. "Right on schedule, Prosecutor Miller. Though we had a brief...” She glanced sideways at Vanessa, whose mouth was hanging open in silent horror. "...interruption regarding dress codes and flying stilettos."
Miller’s gaze shifted slowly from Elena to Marcus, his eyes cold and devoid of any social pleasantry. "Mr. Marcus Sterling. And Miss Vanessa Sterling." He reached into the inside pocket of his navy suit and withdrew a crisp, folded document bearing the official red-and-gold seal of the Federal District Court.
"By order of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," Miller announced, every word dropping like a gavel strike, "you are hereby served with a federal subpoena and a warrant for asset freeze, pending an investigation into corporate fraud, industrial sabotage, obstruction of justice, and the wrongful liquidation of Vance Engineering in nineteen-ninety-eight."
The ballroom erupted.
The collective gasp from two hundred of New York’s most influential elites sounded like a tidal wave hitting a cliffside. Whispers, shrieks, and panicked murmurs exploded across the room. Hedge-fund managers began frantically checking their phones, calculating their exposure to Sterling Global stock before the markets opened tomorrow morning.
"This is an outrage!" Marcus roared, finally losing his cool as he stepped forward, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. "You can't just barge into a private residence with baseless allegations! My attorneys will have your badge by morning, Miller!"
"Your attorneys are currently being detained downstairs while federal agents secure your corporate servers," Miller replied smoothly, unbothered by Marcus’s fury. He signaled two marshals with a subtle flick of his chin. "Mr. Sterling, you are advised that anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
The two tactical marshals stepped forward, their heavy boots thudding against the marble. Before Marcus could lunge or reach for his phone, they grabbed his arms with practiced precision, pinning his wrists behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, metallic *clack*.
"Get your hands off me!" Marcus thrashed, his arrogant CEO persona completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered man beneath. "Vanessa! Do something! Call the board! Call the governor!"
Vanessa stood frozen, her eyes wide with sheer terror as she watched her powerful older brother subdued like a common street criminal. She turned her panicked gaze toward Julian, the man she was supposed to marry in less than a month, the man whose wealth and influence were supposed to shield her forever.
"Julian," she whimpered, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled down her cheeks, ruining her expensive makeup. "Julian, please. You know me. Tell them this is insane. Tell them to stop!"
Julian stared down at her. The man who had spent the last three years showering her with diamonds, buying her silence, and ignoring the toxic cruelty she directed at everyone beneath her station felt nothing inside his chest except a cold, hollow void.
He slowly slipped the heavy, diamond-encrusted platinum engagement ring off his finger.
He didn't say a word. He simply dropped the ring onto the shattered glass of champagne lying on the marble floor between them.
"Julian..." Vanessa whispered, the last piece of her world crumbling into dust.
"The wedding is off, Vanessa," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of any emotion. Then, he turned his gaze back to Elena, who stood tall and unyielding beside the federal prosecutor.
Prosecutor Miller looked at Elena, raising an eyebrow slightly. "Shall we proceed to the boardroom downstairs, Miss Vance? Your father's partners are waiting to sign over the restitution papers."
Elena took a deep, steady breath, feeling the ghost of her father finally resting in peace.
"Let's go," she said.
As the federal agents escorted the handcuffed Marcus Sterling and a sobbing Vanessa toward the grand double doors, the two hundred guests pressed themselves flat against the walls, too terrified to even whisper as the true heir of the Vance empire walked past them to claim her rightful throne.
