Chapter 19 - The Hearth of Grace

Christmas Eve arrived with a blanket of pristine white snow that muffled the entire world in a blanket of absolute peace.
We decorated a small, sturdy pine tree we had cut down together from the edge of the property, hanging it with popcorn garlands, handmade paper snowflakes that Sarah had crafted, and a few cherished ornaments I had brought with me from Columbus. The cabin smelled of pine, cinnamon, and roasting turkey.
As night fell, casting a warm, golden glow across the rustic living room, we gathered around the dining table. There was no expensive china, no silver silverware, and no superficial guests trying to impress one another. There was only simple food, shared laughter, and the quiet, undeniable bond of a family that had walked through the fire and emerged on the other side.
Sarah clutched her red winter coat around her shoulders, refusing to take it off even indoors because she loved it so much. Chloe reached across the table, her hand tentatively resting over mine.
"Thank you, Margaret," Chloe whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You saved us. Not with money, but with grace."
"We saved each other, Chloe," I corrected gently, squeezing her hand back.
After dinner, we bundled up in our heavy coats and stepped out onto the front porch under a sky bursting with a million brilliant stars. The crisp, freezing air filled our lungs as we watched Sarah dance in the fresh powder, her giggles echoing across the silent, snow-covered lake.
Kevin wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against the winter chill. "Merry Christmas, Mom."
"Merry Christmas, my son," I whispered, looking out over the dark, majestic waters of Suttons Bay.

The storm that had shattered my life a year ago across a dining room table in Columbus now felt like a lifetime away. Out of those ruins, I hadn't just found survival; I had found a sanctuary, a restored family, and a peace that no amount of money could ever buy.
