Chapter 22 - Shadows Over Columbus

Two days after Christmas, the snow piled high against the windows of the lake house, but inside, the air crackled with the urgency of a new mission. We were no longer just refugees licking our wounds; we were investigators holding the key to a massive corporate deception.
Kevin sat at the rustic oak dining table, his laptop open, surrounded by printed tax documents, trust deeds, and corporate filings he had managed to securely download from his encrypted archives before he walked out of Sterling & Vance. Chloe stood behind him, massaging his shoulders while peering down at a digital map of downtown Columbus.
"Look at this," Kevin muttered, pointing a trembling finger at a glowing parcel on the screen. "The Vance-Columbus Block. Four acres of prime commercial real estate right in the heart of the financial district. When Uncle Arthur died, the firm told the family that the property was legally deadlocked due to zoning discrepancies and tax liens. They claimed it was worth less than zero."
"And in reality?" I asked, setting a mug of steaming coffee on the table beside him.
"In reality, the city approved a massive light-rail expansion project two years ago that puts a station directly across the street from that block," Kevin said, looking up, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Its actual value isn't in the thousands, Mom. It’s upwards of forty million dollars. And Marcus Sterling and his partners have been quietly positioning themselves to buy it out of the estate for pennies on the dollar by claiming the sole beneficiary—you—was untraceable."
My jaw tightened. Marcus Sterling—the man who had mentored Kevin, the man who had facilitated Jessica’s arrogant takeover of our family dinners, and the man who had quietly nodded when Kevin was pushed out of his partnership—had been playing a long, expensive game of deception.
"They thought I was an old, broken widow hiding in a cabin," I said softly, a cold smile forming on my lips. "They thought I wouldn't know how to read a probate clause."
May you like
"They don't know you at all, Mom," Kevin said, a fierce, proud look in his eyes. "And they definitely don't know what happens when you decide to fight back."
