Chapter 3 - The Retaliation of Miranda Wells

The dawn broke over the city not with golden sunlight, but with a relentless gray drizzle that seemed to mirror the toxic storm brewing across the airwaves.

By six in the morning, every news outlet from London to New York had picked up the sensational headline:

**"SCANDAL AT ASHBOURNE MANOR: SENATOR'S DAUGHTER FLEES TYCOON'S ABUSIVE COMPOUND AFTER VIOLENT ASSAULT BY LIVE-IN NANNY."**

Annie sat at the island counter in the vast, stainless-steel commercial kitchen of Kieran’s private penthouse in the city center. Kieran had evacuated them under cover of darkness, unwilling to let Flora wake up in a manor surrounded by paparazzi.

On the mounted television screen across the kitchen, Miranda Wells was performing the role of her life.

She wore a demure, high-necked cream blouse, completely devoid of jewelry. Her eyes were artfully rimmed with red, her expression a masterclass in aristocratic victimhood. Sitting beside her was her father, Senator Marcus Wells—a man with silver hair, piercing cold blue eyes, and political influence that reached deep into the state judiciary.

*"I only wanted to be a mother to that poor, motherless child,"* Miranda sobbed softly on the morning talk show, pressing a lace handkerchief to her nose. *"But Kieran has allowed that girl, Annie Mercer, complete control over the estate. When I caught Miss Mercer aggressively shaking Flora for refusing her dinner, I stepped in. Miss Mercer attacked me. She scratched my neck, tore my dress... and Kieran chose her. He threw me out into the storm because he is completely under that manipulative woman’s spell."*

Senator Marcus Wells leaned toward the microphone, his voice dripping with righteous political indignation. *"We have already filed a formal complaint with Child Protective Services and the District Attorney's office. This woman, Annie Mercer, has a sealed juvenile record—a troubled past that Kieran Ashbourne irresponsibly ignored. We will ensure she is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and we are petitioning for the immediate removal of Flora Ashbourne from an environment that is clearly compromised."*

Annie’s coffee mug slipped from her fingers.

The ceramic shattered against the marble floor, hot liquid splashing across her bare ankles. She didn't feel the burn. The blood drained from her head, a deafening ring filling her ears.

*A sealed juvenile record.*

"No," Annie whispered, her breath turning to shallow gasps. "No, no, no... they can't. That was expunged. I was sixteen... I was protecting my sister from—"

"Annie."

A pair of warm, solid hands gripped her shoulders from behind. Kieran pulled her gently away from the broken shards of porcelain. He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his tie knotted with razor-sharp precision, his presence completely commanding and immovable.

"Breathe," Kieran commanded softly, his chest pressing against her back, anchoring her to the ground. "Look at me. Breathe."

Annie turned around, her chest heaving, tears spilling freely over her battered cheek. "You don't understand, Kieran! When I was sixteen, my foster father tried to... he came into my sister’s room with a belt. I hit him with a fireplace poker. The system... they protected him because he was a city alderman! They put me in a juvenile detention center for six months before the state dropped the charges and sealed the record! Marcus Wells dug it up. He's going to use it to prove I'm violent!"

She grabbed the lapels of his suit jacket, her knuckles white with desperation.

"They’re going to take Flora," she cried, her voice breaking. "CPS will take her! Miranda wants to punish you by taking your daughter away!"

Kieran didn't flinch. He didn't look shocked by her past. In fact, his dark eyes darkened with an ancient, terrifying fury that made the air in the kitchen drop ten degrees.

"I already know about your record, Annie," Kieran said calmly.

Annie froze. "What?"

"Did you think I hired someone to raise my only daughter without running the most comprehensive background investigation money can buy?" Kieran raised a hand, his long fingers cupping her uninjured cheek, wiping away a tear with the pad of his thumb. "My private investigators read the sealed transcripts eleven months ago. I know your foster father was a predator. I know you took a beating to keep your younger sister safe. I know you spent six months in a state facility because a corrupt judge took a bribe."

He stepped closer, closing every inch between them until Annie had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze.

"I didn't hire you in spite of that record, Annie Mercer," Kieran murmured, his voice thick with an intensity that rattled her soul. "I hired you *because* of it. Because I knew that whatever happened, you were a woman who would stand between a child and a monster, no matter the cost."

Annie’s lips parted, her breath catching in her throat. For months, she had lived under the crushing weight of shame, terrified that if Kieran ever found out about her juvenile record, he would fire her on the spot. Instead, the man had known the entire time. He had trusted her with his daughter’s life precisely because of her courage.

Before she could speak, the heavy glass double doors of the penthouse opened.

Vance walked in, flanked by two men in dark suits carrying heavy metal briefcases. Behind them walked Eleanor Vance—the top criminal defense attorney in the state, known throughout the legal world as "The Iron Maiden."

"We’re ready, Mr. Ashbourne," Eleanor said without preamble, setting her briefcase on the marble counter. "The Wells family made a fatal mistake. They went live on national television before Marcus’s team could verify the Ashbourne Manor server architecture."

Kieran turned to Eleanor, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Explain."

Eleanor opened her laptop, spinning the screen toward Kieran and Annie.

"Miranda assumed that the estate’s security cameras were on the local network—the one she had her father’s IT specialist hack three weeks ago," Eleanor explained, tapping the keyboard. "She thought she wiped the west wing nursery feed. But she didn't know you run an independent, military-grade quantum-encrypted backup server directly through Ashbourne Maritime’s private satellite network."

On the screen, a high-definition video began to play.

Annie looked away, but the audio was crystal clear, filling the kitchen with sickening clarity.

On the screen was the nursery. Annie was sitting on the floor, helping Flora build a wooden castle. The door burst open. Miranda entered, screaming obscenities about a dinner schedule. When Annie stood up calmly to ask her to keep her voice down in front of the child, Miranda lunged.

The video captured everything.

It captured Miranda grabbing Annie by the hair, slamming her against the bookcase. It captured Miranda forcing the screaming, sobbing six-year-old Flora onto the vanity stool.

And then came the horrifying, calculated rhythm of Miranda’s voice:

*"Count, you little brat. Every time I hit her, you count out loud. Or the next one goes across your face."*

On the screen, Miranda’s diamond ring caught the light as she struck Annie. Once. Twice. Annie stood there, hands raised only to shield Flora’s view, absorbing every blow with tears streaming down her face, repeating over and over: *"Flora, look at me. Don't look at her hand. Look at Annie. I'm okay, baby. Just count."*

Vance slammed the laptop shut. Even the hardened security director had a white-knuckle grip on the edge of the counter, his jaw trembling with rage.

"The audio has been digitally isolated," Eleanor said, her voice shaking with suppressed fury. "There is no ambiguity. This is felony assault, felony child endangerment, witness intimidation, and extortion."

Kieran looked at Eleanor. "Do we release it?"

"If we release it now," Eleanor cautioned, "Marcus Wells will claim it’s deepfake technology generated by your tech firms. He’ll get an injunction, bury it in preliminary hearings, and stall until the media cycle destroys Annie’s reputation permanently. Marcus controls three state judges, Kieran."

"Then we don't give it to the judges," Kieran said, his voice flat, absolute, and merciless. "We give it to the world. Where is Marcus hosting his annual Senate re-election fundraising gala?"

Vance checked his phone. "Tonight. At the Grand Imperial Ballroom. Eight hundred donors, three network camera crews, and every major political stakeholder on the eastern seaboard."

Kieran adjusted the diamond cufflinks at his wrists. A terrifying, predatory darkness settled over his features.

"Get Annie a dress," Kieran ordered coldly. "The finest gown money can buy. Tonight, we attend the Senator's gala."
