Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Ambush

The sound of Miranda Wells’s voice roaring through the ballroom speakers was like the crack of a whip across bare skin.
*"Count, you little brat! Every time I hit her, you count out loud. Or the next one goes across your face!"*
The visual on the towering screens was unsparingly clear.
The entire elite of the state watched in horrified, paralyzed silence as Miranda Wells—the very woman who had spent the morning weeping on national television about her innocence—slammed a young woman against a nursery wall, repeatedly striking her across the face with open-handed, savage fury.
The camera caught every single detail. It caught six-year-old Flora curled on the vanity stool, crying hysterically, clutching her chest as her tiny voice echoed through the ballroom speakers:
*"One... please stop... two... Mommy, please... three..."*
And it captured Annie Mercer standing unmoving, her body positioned between the violent woman and the child, absorbing the blows without retaliating, whispering comforting words to the little girl through split lips.
In the ballroom, several women screamed in horror. Society matrons covered their mouths, tears springing to their eyes. Men who had contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Marcus Wells’s campaign stood frozen, staring in absolute disgust.
"Turn it off!" Miranda shrieked from the stage, her voice cracking into madness. She lunged toward the AV technician's booth at the side of the stage. "Turn it off right now! Daddy, make them turn it off!"
The technician wasn't there. Vance stood at the master control console, his massive arms folded across his chest, daring anyone to take a step toward him.
Senator Marcus Wells reached the podium, his face purple with apoplexy. "This is a fabrication! A malicious deepfake engineered by Ashbourne’s tech subsidiaries to derail my campaign! It’s slander!"
Kieran stepped onto the first tier of the stage stairs. He turned slightly, offering his hand to Annie.
Annie Mercer placed her gloved hand in his. With her chin held high, the emeralds gleaming beneath the chandelier, she ascended the stairs beside him, facing the very people who had spent the day branding her a monster.
Kieran reached the podium. Marcus tried to block him, but Kieran simply stepped into his space, his sheer physical dominance forcing the aging politician to stumble backward. Kieran took the microphone.
"The footage you are watching was retrieved from the Ashbourne Maritime military-grade quantum satellite network," Kieran announced, his voice reverberating with thunderous clarity. "Ten minutes ago, the raw, unedited, cryptographically verified digital files were submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Attorney General’s Office, and the Department of Family Services."
Kieran turned his gaze onto Miranda, who was trembling violently against the velvet stage curtains.
"You wanted discipline, Miranda?" Kieran spoke into the microphone, his words sealing her fate before the world. "Here is your discipline."
The heavy rear doors of the ballroom burst open once more.
This time, it was not an uninvited billionaire.
A dozen state troopers and federal agents, led by the Chief of Police, marched into the ballroom with swift, tactical precision. The lead detective walked straight up the stage stairs, bypassing Kieran entirely, and produced a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Miranda Wells," Detective Rossi said, his voice cold and loud enough for the press microphones to capture every word. "You are under arrest for felony assault in the second degree, felony child endangerment, and witness intimidation. You have the right to remain silent."
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Miranda screamed, kicking and thrashing as the cold steel snapped around her wrists. "Daddy! Do something! Tell them who you are! Tell them!"
Marcus Wells stood paralyzed, staring at the flashing cameras. He looked at his daughter, then looked at the eight hundred donors who were already turning their backs on him in sheer repulsion. The political instincts that had kept him in power for thirty years kicked in with ruthless, reptilian efficiency.
Marcus took a step back, separating himself from his daughter.
"I... I had no knowledge of this," Marcus stammered to the nearest press camera, his voice shaking. "If these horrific allegations are true... I condemn this behavior entirely. The law must take its course."
Miranda’s shriek of betrayal was almost inhuman. "Daddy! You bastard! You promised me—"
The troopers dragged her down the stage steps and through the central aisle. The press descended upon her like vultures, their cameras capturing every sob, every smear of mascara, and every scream of rage as the disgraced socialite was paraded out into the pouring rain in handcuffs.
Kieran turned back to the podium. He didn't look at Marcus Wells, who had shrunk into a hollow shell of a man.
Kieran leaned down to the microphone one last time.
"Miss Annie Mercer," Kieran declared to the eight hundred stunned guests and the live television broadcast, "is not a servant. She is the savior of my family. And anyone who ever raises a hand or a word against her will answer directly to me."
He stepped away from the podium, offered his arm to Annie, and together they walked down the stage.

The silence that had held the ballroom suddenly cracked. A single guest began to applaud. Then another. Within five seconds, the entire Grand Imperial Ballroom erupted into a deafening, standing ovation for the young woman who had endured ten blows to shield a motherless child.
