Chapter 23 - The Poisoned Anchor

Before Mateo could draw his weapon, *The Cerberus* did not retreat into the harbor channel.

Instead, its massive steel bow lurched sideways, slamming with deliberate, devastating force into the heavy wooden pilings supporting Pier 49.

The impact sent a shuddering shockwave through the timber. Old creosote beams snapped like matchsticks. The entire pier groaned, tilting precariously toward the icy black water.

"Claire! Move!" Mateo roared, grabbing my arm and hauling me back toward the SUV just as the section of dock where I had been standing collapsed into the churning sea.

On the deck of the retreating tender, Lucian stepped out from the wheelhouse, holding a remote detonator aloft. He flashed a bloody, bruised grin toward me—the mark from my brass bookend still fresh across his temple.

He pressed the toggle.

Three hundred yards across the harbor basin, moored at the primary commercial terminal, sat the *Arthur B. II*—the crown jewel of Bennett Maritime, a 60,000-ton container ship loaded with four thousand freight units awaiting morning clearance.

A deep, subterranean thud vibrated through the water, followed by a terrifying flash of orange light deep within the ship’s lower engine hold.

A muffled explosion echoed across the bay.

Sirens instantly began wailing across the Port of Boston. Black smoke billowed into the midnight sky, lit from below by an angry inferno inside the ship's midsection.

"They breached the fuel ballast!" Mateo shouted over the rising din of emergency sirens. "If that ship lists and capsizes in the main shipping channel, it will block the entire port of Boston! The liability claims will wipe out Bennett Maritime before sunrise!"

In the back of the SUV, Vanessa sat curled into a fetal position, sobbing into her soaked sleeves. "We’re going to die! We’re all going to jail! Claire, do something!"

I turned around, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her ruined coat, and yanked her upright.

"Shut up!" I snapped, my eyes blazing with pure fire. "You wanted to be a player, Vanessa? You wanted to make deals with billionaires? Look at what your greed bought us! Look at it!"

She stared at the burning ship across the harbor, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror.

"Now tell me," I commanded, shaking her. "When you gave Julian the harbor logs, what else did you give him? What did you take from my office?"

Vanessa began to choke on her tears, shaking uncontrollably. "I... I took the override master key! The cryptographic fob Dad kept in his desk! Julian told me it was just for the payroll accounts!"

"You gave him the automated harbor lock controls," Mateo said, horror dawning on his face. "Julian isn't just sinking the *Arthur B.* He’s locking the maritime floodgates. The harbor rescue tugs can't deploy to fight the fire."

I turned my back on the burning harbor and locked eyes with Mateo. "We’re not waiting for the city. Get us to the Operations Control Center at the South Terminal. Right now."
