Chapter 25 - The Boardroom Siege

The lower pump room beneath Pier 12 felt like the boiler room of hell.

The heat radiating through the concrete bulkhead from the burning *Arthur B.* was stifling. Dense gray smoke seeped through the ventilation ducts, tasting of burning plastics and sulfur. Above us, the deafening groans of the dying freighter vibrated through the metal ceiling plates.

"Over here!" Mateo shouted, shining a high-powered tactical flashlight through the haze.

Mounted against the reinforced concrete wall was an industrial steel safe box, painted safety yellow, stamped with the Bennett Maritime anchor crest: *EMERGENCY SYSTEM OVERRIDE - DUAL BLOODLINE MANDATE.*

Beside the box was an analog pressure valve and two glowing optical scanners, linked directly to the city’s submerged floodgate hydraulics.

"The scanners read vascular blood patterns," Mateo called out, coughing through the smoke. "Arthur set it up using private genetic sequencing. Claire, your hand goes on the left. Vanessa, your hand goes on the right."

Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the flooded pump room, water up to her ankles, staring at the glowing scanner like it was an electric chair. "Claire, the ceiling... it's cracking! We're going to drown down here!"

"Put your damn hand on the glass!" I screamed, slamming my palm onto the left scanner.

A green light flashed under my skin. The digital prompt above chimed: *GENETIC PROFILE CONFIRMED: CLAIRE BENNETT (MOREAU). BIOMETRIC MATCH 1 OF 2 ACCEPTED.*

Vanessa was hyperventilating, her knees knocking together. A chunk of burning insulation fell from the ceiling, splashing into the oily water beside her. She screamed, jumping back.

"Vanessa!" I yelled, reaching through the smoke and seizing her by the front of her soaked trench coat, dragging her violently toward the console. "For once in your pathetic, selfish life, do something that isn't about yourself! Put your hand on the glass!"

She looked at my eyes—at the cold, unyielding rage that Arthur Bennett had passed down to me—and something in her cracked. The spoiled, petulant facade shattered completely, leaving behind a terrified, desperate girl who finally realized she was at the end of the line.

With a sob, Vanessa shoved her right palm onto the second glass panel.

The scanner hummed. A second green light illuminated the console: *GENETIC PROFILE CONFIRMED: VANESSA BENNETT (VANCE). BIOMETRIC MATCH 2 OF 2 ACCEPTED. BYPASS ACTIVATED.*

A massive mechanical clunk reverberated deep within the harbor floorboards.

Behind us, the hydraulic bypass levers hissed with tremendous pneumatic pressure. Across the harbor, the sound of the massive steel floodgates groaning open cut through the roar of the fire.

Through the narrow reinforced slit window of the pump room, we watched as three massive red harbor fire tugs surged through the newly opened channel, their high-pressure water cannons unleashing twin arcs of ocean foam directly into the blazing belly of the *Arthur B.*

The list of the ship slowed. The flames began to choke beneath millions of gallons of pressurized seawater.

Vanessa collapsed against the console, sliding down to the wet concrete floor, weeping uncontrollably into her trembling hands.

I stood there, chest heaving, wiping soot from my forehead.

Mateo’s radio suddenly squawked to life. It was Captain Harris from the command tower, his voice crackling with static and adrenaline.

"Miss Bennett! Mateo! The floodgates are open! Fire crews have the blaze contained! But we've got an urgent situation on the east jetty! Julian Moreau’s vessel didn't flee into international waters!"

I grabbed the radio from Mateo's shoulder. "Harris, where is he?"

"He turned back toward the private corporate terminal!" Harris shouted. "He’s at the Bennett Maritime headquarters tower! He’s brought armed men into the executive boardroom! He’s executing an emergency hostile acquisition under the French maritime treaty right now!"
