Chapter 19 - The Confession by the Fire

Victoria sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket by the roaring stone fireplace, holding a steaming mug of hot tea with both hands. Her expensive designer boots sat leaking a puddle of melted snow onto the hardwood floor, utterly ruined. The contrast between the impeccably polished corporate executive who had sneered at Margot a year ago and the pathetic, shivering creature sitting before them was absolute.
Margot was safely tucked away upstairs reading a book, blissfully unaware of the storm raging both outside and inside the house.
Julian leaned against the mantelpiece, looking down at his sister with a clinical detachment. Cecilia stood quietly beside him, her presence an anchor of steady, unyielding strength.
"Well?" Julian prompted, breaking the heavy silence. "You're here. The snow is blocking the roads for at least twenty-four hours. You have our undivided attention."
Victoria took a shaky sip of the tea, her eyes darting around the rustic, unpretentious living room as if searching for hidden cameras. "The board voted to oust Arthur yesterday morning," she whispered, her voice cracking. "They’re blaming everything on him. They’re saying he orchestrated the fraudulent asset transfers to protect his personal accounts."
"And did he?" Julian asked calmly.
"No," Victoria swallowed hard, refusing to meet his eyes. "I did. I forged his signature on the subsidiary buyouts. I needed the liquidity to cover bad bets on commercial real estate in Chicago. If the audits hit the public ledger, the stock will plummet to zero. Sterling & Vance will be delisted by the end of the week."
"Let it plummet," Julian said evenly. "Let it burn to the ground. Why should I care?"
"Because of the liability!" Victoria snapped, a flash of her old arrogance briefly returning before she withered back under his unblinking stare. "The federal prosecutors are looking at the foundational trust accounts as well. They think the primary family members conspired to hide capital offshore. If they subpoena the master trust, they’ll trace it back to the subsidiary accounts—which means your name, Julian. Your name is still attached to the primary holding shell."
Julian smiled faintly—a cold, sharp expression that made Victoria flinch. "My name is legally severed from every operating account associated with Sterling & Vance, Victoria. I had our family legal counsel file the absolute disclaimer six months ago. The only thing my name is attached to is a private charitable foundation that builds community clinics and funds single-parent housing initiatives."

Victoria stared at him in absolute horror. "You... you gave up the primary voting shares? Without taking a buyout?"
"I didn't want your blood money," Julian said quietly. "I wanted out. And now, you've finally achieved what Arthur spent a lifetime trying to prevent: you’ve completely destroyed the Sterling empire all by yourself."
