Chapter 25 - The Quiet Horizon

The fire slowly burned down to a bed of glowing red embers, casting long, soft shadows across the peaceful room. Outside, the Vermont wilderness stretched out endlessly under a canopy of brilliant, diamond-bright stars, quiet and eternal.
Julian stood by the front window, holding a mug of cooling tea, watching the moonlight glisten off the pristine snowdrifts that covered the driveway. The past was a closed book, locked away in a vault of its own making, unable to reach them here in the sanctuary they had built with their own hands.
Yet, as Julian stared out into the vast, silent dark of the winter night, a faint, rhythmic crunch of footsteps broke through the stillness of the woods far down the edge of the property line—a sound so light, so deliberate, it felt less like an intruder and more like a lingering echo from the past.
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly as he set his mug down on the windowsill, his hand resting quietly on the wooden frame.

Julian stared at it, his heart skipping a single, heavy beat as the silence of the night seemed to hold its breath.
