Chapter 11 - The Unforeseen Inheritance

The rain fell in sheets against the panoramic glass windows of the Bennett Tower penthouse, washing away the remnants of a city that had once tried to crush me. Three years had passed since the night Sloane Mercer poured a glass of Coke over my head at the Grand Horizon Hotel, broadcasting my humiliation to forty thousand gleeful internet spectators. Three years since Evan Caldwell laughed, treating my dignity as collateral damage in his pathetic pursuit of social status.
Now, sitting behind a mahogany desk imported from Italy, I didn't feel the sting of that sticky soda. I felt the steady, reassuring weight of a multi-billion-dollar portfolio bearing my name. As the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Bennett Industries—a position I stepped into following Daniel’s strategic transition to Chairman—every heartbeat was a testament to survival.
My phone buzzed against the marble tray. It was an alert from corporate security.
*“Unscheduled visitor in the lobby. Refuses to leave. Claims personal business regarding the Mercer Estate.”*
I frowned, tracing the polished edge of my diamond-encrusted wedding band. The Mercer family had been utterly dismantled after their fraudulent business practices were exposed in the wake of the failed harbor deal. Sloane and Evan had vanished into the background noise of disgraced socialites, dodging lawsuits and bankruptcy notices. What could any remnant of them possibly want with me now?
"Send them up," I instructed into the intercom, my voice completely devoid of hesitation. "And notify legal to have the non-disclosure agreements ready."
Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed. The heavy oak doors slid open to reveal a figure shivering in a soaked, frayed trench coat. It wasn't Sloane. It wasn't Evan. It was an elderly woman with sharp, haunted eyes and trembling hands clutching a leather briefcase that looked as old as the century itself.
"Mrs. Bennett," the woman rasped, her voice cracking as she stepped onto the plush Persian rug. "Or should I say... Clara."

"You have two minutes to explain who you are and why you're tracking mud across my floor before I have security escort you out," I said calmly, leaning back in my leather chair.
"My name is Martha Vance," she whispered, taking a slow, painful step forward. "I was head housekeeper for Arthur Mercer—Sloane’s grandfather. Before he died... he left something behind. Something Sloane and her father tried very hard to bury. And they think you're the only one who can destroy it—or use it to finish them for good."
