Chapter 12 - Whispers from the Past

Martha Vance collapsed into the velvet armchair opposite my desk, her breathing shallow and ragged. I didn't offer her water immediately; in the corporate world—and in the brutal social ecosystem I had clawed my way out of—trust was a currency earned, never given.

"Start talking, Martha," I said, keeping my gaze locked onto hers. "And make it compelling enough to stop me from calling building security."

Martha opened the weathered leather briefcase with trembling fingers. She pulled out a stack of yellowed papers, tied together with a faded blue ribbon, alongside a heavy, ornate silver key.

"You think the Mercers fell because of bad investments and illegal wiretaps," Martha began, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "That was just the surface. That was what Daniel uncovered when he audited them to save the harbor. But Arthur Mercer... he was a monster long before Sloane was ever born. He built his entire shipping empire on stolen land, forced labor, and forged signatures."

She slid the top document across the polished mahogany. I glanced down. My breath hitched.

The name at the top of the forged land deed wasn't an anonymous corporation. It was *Bennett*. My grandfather’s name.

"Your family didn't lose their docks in a fair trade thirty years ago, Clara," Martha said, tears welling in her clouded eyes. "Arthur Mercer ruined them. He framed your grandfather for embezzlement, forced him out of business, and drove him to an early grave. Sloane and Evan... they found out about this archive six months ago. That’s why they targeted you at the Grand Horizon. It wasn't random cruelty. It was calculated intimidation. They knew who you were before you even knew yourself."

The silence in the penthouse grew deafening. The storm outside lashed against the glass, but inside, my blood turned to ice. Every drop of sticky soda from that fateful Friday night flashed behind my eyes—not as a symbol of random bullying, but as a deliberate, generational vendetta. They hadn't just humiliated a waitress. They had tortured the granddaughter of the man their family had destroyed.

"Where is Sloane now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"She's desperate," Martha replied, sliding the silver key forward. "She’s broke, she’s hiding in the Hamptons under an assumed name, and she’s trying to sell the remaining forged documents to a foreign buyer who wants to dismantle Bennett Industries from the inside. This key... it unlocks the safety deposit box where the master ledger is kept. The ledger that proves every single asset the Mercers ever held legally belongs to you."
