Chapter 20 - THE NEXT CHAPTER

Two weeks later, the front page of every major national newspaper carried the same bold headline: *JUDICIAL EMPIRE COLLAPSES: STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND PROBATE JUDGE ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD SCHEME.*
The county probate court had been placed under federal receivership, the corrupt medical examiners who had fabricated Lily’s diagnostic records were behind bars awaiting trial, and the lingering remnants of Margaret’s estate had been fully dissolved and redirected into a charitable trust dedicated to supporting victims of corporate and judicial corruption.
Our house at Blackwood Ridge had returned to its natural state of peace. The smart-home systems had been completely ripped out and replaced with old-fashioned deadbolts, analog thermostats, and the warm, comforting glow of standard incandescent lamps.
On a bright, crisp Saturday morning exactly one month after our night in the warden’s cabin, Lily sat at her bedroom desk, the morning sun streaming through the clean, freshly washed windowpanes as she dipped her fine brush into a pan of brilliant cobalt blue watercolor.
Downstairs in the kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon pancakes filled the air as Daniel flipped another golden cake on the griddle, humming a cheerful tune under his breath.

*“The Vanguard Foundation is dead, Victoria. But the European accounts were never part of the domestic ledger. If you want to know who really funded the glitter shipment on Lily’s tenth birthday... check the coordinates attached below.”*
My breath caught in my throat as I tapped the attachment link. A global positioning map opened on the screen, centering not on Blackwood Ridge, not even on the United States—but on an isolated, private estate located on the shores of Lake Geneva, registered to a name we had thought buried in history years ago.

From upstairs, Lily’s clear, joyful laugh drifted down the hallway as she called out, "Mom! Come look at the forest painting I just finished! It's the best one I've ever made!"
I looked down at the glowing coordinates on the phone screen, then slowly turned my head toward the stairs, a slow, determined smile forming on my lips as the screen began to flash with a new incoming transmission...
