Chapter 25 - THE TEN-MINUTE TICKER

The heavy click of the silver detonator toggle echoed through the cavernous library like a gunshot. For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The fire crackled in the stone hearth, the shadows danced against the towering mahogany bookshelves, and the pale moonlight continued to wash across the Persian rug. Julian Vance simply sat back in his leather armchair, a thin, self-satisfied smile curling the edges of his pale lips. Then, deep beneath the floorboards, a low, mechanical whine began to build—a metallic grinding sound that vibrated through the soles of our boots. Across the far wall of the library, a massive section of the mahogany shelving unit slid outward with a hydraulic hiss, revealing a concealed control console fitted with an old-school digital countdown timer glowing in brilliant, blinding crimson numbers: *09:59... 09:58...*

“A self-destruction protocol,” Julian said calmly, steepling his fingers together as he watched the numbers tick downward toward oblivion. “Château de Mornay has stood for eight hundred years, and it will not fall into the hands of federal bureaucrats or rebellious parents. This entire wing—including the subterranean archive containing every piece of evidence against my family—is wired with six hundred pounds of industrial demolition charges. In ten minutes, this mountain estate will become a mass grave. And the best part? Swiss emergency services won’t even dispatch a rescue boat until morning. You came all this way for justice, Victoria. Let’s see how much you can salvage while you’re burning alive.”

Daniel didn't hesitate. He lunged across the hearth, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his velvet smoking jacket and hauling the old man out of his armchair with terrifying force, slamming him hard against the stone fireplace mantel. “Deactivate it! Give me the override code right now or I swear to God I’ll put a bullet in your chest right here!” Julian didn't flinch; he just coughed softly, a dark gleam of satisfaction shining in his pale blue eyes. “There is no override code, boy. The circuit is hardwired into the seismic foundation sensors. Once tripped, it cannot be stopped. You want the files? They’re all stored on the mainframe terminal behind that console. But downloading three terabytes of encrypted data takes at least fifteen minutes. You only have nine. Do the math.”

I didn't waste a single breath arguing. While Daniel held Julian pinned against the mantel, I sprinted across the library to the concealed control console. The main screen was locked behind a multi-factor biometric encryption wall requiring both a retinal scan and a twelve-digit cryptographic passphrase. My hands shook slightly as I pulled the secure decryption drive from my tactical vest and slammed it into the console port. The screen flashed red: *BIOMETRIC MISMATCH. AUTHORIZED USER REQUIRED.* I looked back at Julian, locked in a brutal struggle with Daniel by the fireplace. Without hesitation, I drew my tactical knife, sliced my left palm across the blade, and pressed my bleeding hand directly onto the console’s scanner pad, overriding the security system with raw, brute-force admin protocols that I had learned hacking the Vanguard Foundation's core servers months ago.

The screen flickered violently, turning from aggressive crimson to a steady, pulsing amber as the primary data-transfer bar popped up on the display: *DOWNLOADING ARCHIVE: 1%... 2%... 5%...* The timer on the wall flashed relentlessly: *07:42... 07:41... 07:40...* The air in the library began to fill with the acrid smell of ozone and superheated electrical wiring as the chateau's emergency systems started failing under the strain of the detonation sequence. Dust and pulverized mortar rained down from the vaulted ceiling as the outer walls began to groan under the impending seismic shock. Daniel shoved Julian hard against the floor, running over to my side as the download bar crawled agonizingly forward. “Vic, the floor is fracturing by the west wing! We have to move now or we’ll be buried alive!”
