Chapter 23 - The Mirage in Cabo

The heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse suite at *The Grand Mariposa* in Cabo San Lucas swung open with a muffled click, revealing a scene of frantic, pathetic chaos. Chloe stood in the center of the sprawling, marble-floored living room, surrounded by open Louis Vuitton suitcases, mounds of designer clothing, and an array of velvet jewelry boxes spilling over with loose diamonds and platinum settings. Her hair was greasy, her face devoid of the meticulously applied makeup that had once been her armor, and her eyes were bloodshot from days of sleepless panic.
"Where is it? Where is the damn wire confirmation?" she shrieked at the empty room, throwing her phone against the floor-to-ceiling glass window. The screen cracked with a dull snap, but the device didn't shatter.
A quiet, measured knock sounded at the heavy double doors.
Chloe froze, her breath catching in her throat. For a second, she stood rigid, hoping against hope that it was room service, or perhaps a courier with the forged passport she had paid an exorbitant sum for through a dark-web broker. "Go away! Do not disturb!" she screamed in broken Spanish, her voice shaking violently.
The door didn't open from the outside; it swung inward with smooth, hydraulic precision as a pair of local federal police officers, accompanied by a private liaison wearing an immaculate bespoke suit, stepped into the suite.
"Ms. Chloe Vance," the liaison said, his voice smooth, cold, and entirely devoid of inflection. "Or should I say, Ms. Chloe Sterling under registration 449-B?"
Chloe staggered backward, her heel catching on the edge of a Persian rug, sending her sprawling onto a pile of silk evening gowns. "You can't do this! I am a citizen! I have rights! My husband—Julian Vance—is a prominent investor! He’ll ruin you!"
The liaison stepped closer, pulling a sleek leather folio from his inner jacket pocket and flipping it open to reveal a series of federal seizure warrants bearing the unmistakable seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
"Mr. Julian Vance is currently fleeing federal marshals in international waters," the liaison said calmly, holding up a certified bank statement. "And these diamonds—every single one of them—were purchased using embezzled funds from the Vance-Sterling Trust account #8892, which was legally transferred to sole ownership under Eleanor Vance three months ago. You are currently in possession of stolen property across international borders."
Chloe stared at the document, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The reality of her situation—the absolute, crushing finality of her downfall—finally penetrated the thick wall of denial she had constructed around herself since the day of the wedding.
"She did this," Chloe whispered, her voice dropping into a broken, rasping sob. "Eleanor did this to me..."

"No, Ms. Vance," the liaison said as the local officers stepped forward with heavy steel cuffs. "You built the cage. Your sister simply locked the door."
