Chapter 16 - The Final Plea

Chloe stared up at me, her mouth trembling, the last remnants of her arrogant family pride completely burned away by the harsh fires of reality. She realized, in that exact moment, that the power dynamic had permanently shifted. The little sister she and Evelyn had dismissed, mocked, and discarded had risen from the ashes, completely untouchable. "Please, Clara," Chloe whimpered, her voice dropping to a desperate, broken whisper. "Is there... is there nothing I can say to make you help us? I have nowhere to go. All of my accounts are frozen too. The apartment lease was in Mom's name; they evicted me this morning. I'm sleeping on a cot in the motel room with her. I have nothing." I looked at her, feeling a strange mixture of pity and absolute detachment. It was a tragedy, truly—the classic Greek downfall of a family built on greed and superficial vanity. But it was not my tragedy to bear. "You have your health, Chloe," I said quietly, walking over to the coat rack and picking up my leather briefcase. "You have a college degree. You have two hands and a brain. You can do what I did: start from the bottom, work hard, and build something real. Stop waiting for someone to rescue you from the consequences of your own choices." Chloe watched in stunned silence as I walked toward the office door. "Where are you going?" she asked, her voice hollow. "I have a dinner meeting with a new client," I replied smoothly, resting my hand on the brass doorknob. "And unlike my last family Christmas dinner, I actually want to be there." I pulled the door open, stepping out into the bright, buzzing hallway, leaving Chloe alone in the empty office. I didn't look back. As I rode the elevator down to the lobby, my phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number. I opened it while walking toward the glass revolving doors. *Federal marshals have taken custody of E. Vance at the Sunset Motel. Booking process underway.* I locked the screen, slipped the phone into my coat pocket, and stepped out into the crisp, cool afternoon air of the city. The sun was breaking through the heavy grey clouds, casting a brilliant, golden sheen over the towering skyscrapers. The storm was finally over.
