Chapter 27 - Inside Chambers

Judge Sterling’s private chambers smelled of old leather books and strong pipe tobacco. The walls were lined floor-to-ceiling with heavy oak bookshelves, and a large mahogany desk dominated the center of the room.

Judge Sterling—a stern-faced man in his sixties with sharp silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses—sat behind the desk, rubbing his temples as he looked down at the documents Maya had slammed onto his blotter ten minutes prior.

Julian Thorne stood on the left side of the room, his posture rigid, his face carefully neutral, though a faint muscle was twitching in his jaw. Maya stood proudly on the right, arms crossed, while Arthur and I sat quietly in the wooden chairs behind her.

"Mr. Thorne," Judge Sterling said, his voice deep and gravelly, carrying the quiet authority of a man who had seen every dirty trick in the corporate playbook. "Your legal team filed an emergency ex parte injunction at 11:42 PM on a Sunday night, citing imminent asset dissipation of an offshore holding."

"Yes, Your Honor," Julian replied smoothly, stepping forward. "The petition is fully compliant with federal bankruptcy restitution protocols. The Vance estate creditors have a legitimate right to freeze any assets tied to the family lineage before they can be hidden abroad."

"Is that so?" Judge Sterling lifted a single sheet of paper from the stack Maya had provided. "Then perhaps you can explain to me why the digital routing logs for your filing originate from a private residential server in the Cayman Islands, bypassing the federal court’s automated intake gateway entirely?"

Julian’s composure faltered just a fraction. "That... must be a technical routing anomaly, Your Honor. The urgency of the case required secure transmission—"

"Don't insult my intelligence, Mr. Thorne," Judge Sterling snapped, slamming his hand down on the desk. The sound echoed sharply off the oak bookshelves. "You used an unauthorized backdoor channel to push an emergency order past the night duty clerk without proper jurisdictional verification. In my courtroom, that isn't a technical anomaly. That’s an egregious breach of judicial procedure."

Maya suppressed a triumphant smile, keeping her expression professional.

"Furthermore," Judge Sterling continued, sliding the second document toward Julian, "Ms. Vance’s counsel has provided verifiable proof that the Valensole trust was established in 1978 under an independent offshore entity completely walled off from the domestic corporate portfolio. It is not subject to the Vance bankruptcy liquidation. Never was."

Julian swallowed hard, his professional veneer finally cracking under the weight of the judge's scrutiny. "Your Honor, my clients—"

"Your clients are overreaching," Judge Sterling cut him off coldly. "And you, Mr. Thorne, are skating dangerously close to a disbarment hearing for submitting falsified procedural affidavits. The emergency injunction is hereby revoked, nullified, and dismissed with prejudice. If your firm attempts to harass Ms. Vance or her family regarding this property ever again, I will personally issue a bench warrant for your arrest."

Julian stood frozen in silence, his career-defining play completely shattered in less than fifteen minutes.
