Chapter 14 - Descent into the Alps

The cabin of the Gulfstream G650 was bathed in the soft, amber glow of recessed night-lighting as it banked steeply over the jagged, snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps. At 41,000 feet, the aircraft felt impossibly smooth, cutting through the stratosphere like a silver bullet, completely invisible to civilian radar thanks to its active electronic countermeasures suite.

In the aft cabin, Claire sat across a mahogany fold-out table from her father, her fingers flying across the glowing keyboard of her tactical tablet. The screen displayed a live, high-resolution topographical map of Viktor Vance’s private estate, superimposed with thermal heat signatures, perimeter security patrols, and automated camera blind spots.

"We’re ten minutes out from drop coordinates," Marcus said, methodically snapping the retaining clips on his tactical vest. He checked the magazine of his Sig Sauer MPX, verifying the round count before sliding it into a custom-molded thigh holster. Across from him, the four federal operators sat in absolute silence, their faces calm, focused, and utterly devoid of fear.

Claire didn't look up from her screen. "The estate's automated defense grid is tied into a local fiber-optic relay station three miles down the mountain. If we try to approach by air without disabling the relay first, their radar systems will pick up our thermal signature within thirty seconds."

Marcus paused, leaning forward to study her screen. "Can you bypass the relay?"

"I don't need to bypass it," Claire said, a sharp, confident grin spreading across her face. "I spent the last two hours analyzing their encryption firmware. It’s running on an outdated Linux kernel from 2018. I’ve written a script that will inject a cascading logic bomb directly into their routing tables. It won't just blind their cameras—it will lock their automated security gates in the open position and trigger a false-alarm evacuation protocol across the entire complex."

Marcus looked at his daughter, a profound wave of pride washing over him that momentarily eclipsed the tension of the impending combat drop. "You’ve been paying attention during those late-night briefings, haven't you?"

"I had a good teacher," Claire replied smoothly, hitting the enter key on her tablet. "Logic bomb deployed. Relays are offline in... three... two... one."

On the tactical display, the flashing red security icons surrounding Viktor’s estate suddenly winked out, replaced by steady, glowing green circles indicating an automated evacuation sequence.

"Nicely done, sweetheart," Marcus said, standing up as the cabin door chime signaled their imminent descent. "Now, put on your tactical headset and stay behind Operator Vance. If things get loud, you drop flat and let the professionals handle the heavy lifting."

"I'm not hiding under a table this time, Dad," Claire said firmly, standing up and sliding a lightweight Kevlar vest over her shoulders. "I'm part of this team."

Marcus didn't argue. He just nodded, turning toward the forward hatch as the pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom. *“Approaching drop zone in sixty seconds. Altitude dropping to five thousand feet. Hold on to something solid.”*

The rear cargo ramp of the modified Gulfstream lowered with a hydraulic whine, instantly flooding the cabin with a roaring rush of sub-zero wind and the deafening howl of jet engines. The night sky outside was a swirling vortex of black clouds and jagged white mountain peaks gleaming under a pale crescent moon.

Marcus stood at the edge of the ramp, the freezing wind whipping his gray hair across his forehead. He didn't hesitate. With a single, fluid motion, he stepped off the ledge into the abyss, followed instantly by the four tactical operators.

Claire took a deep breath, checked her harness one last time, and stepped out into the freezing void after her father.

The freefall was a terrifying, exhilarating rush of adrenaline. The wind shrieked past her ears, the ground rushing up to meet them at terrifying speeds as the snow-covered peaks of the Alps grew larger by the second. At four thousand feet, Marcus deployed his canopy, his red strobe light flashing once to signal the team.

Claire pulled her ripcord, and with a sharp, violent jolt, her parachute snapped open, arresting her descent and swinging her gently into a wide, controlled glide toward the darkened courtyard of Viktor Vance’s estate.

Seconds later, they touched down with soft crunches of packed snow just beyond the perimeter fence of the chalet.

The estate was in absolute chaos. Sirens blared across the courtyards, and guards in heavy tactical gear were streaming out of the main building toward the perimeter gates, completely disoriented by the false-alarm evacuation protocol Claire had triggered from the jet.

Marcus unclipped his parachute harness in a single, practiced movement, motioning for the team to fan out.

"Primary objective: Server room in the sub-basement," Marcus whispered into his headset, his voice calm and lethal. "Secondary objective: Secure Viktor Vance alive. I want answers about who else in Washington is on his payroll."

"Copy that," the lead operator murmured, motioning toward the heavy glass doors of the main chalet.

They moved like ghosts across the moonlit courtyard, stepping through the shattered security gates that stood wide open—thanks to Claire’s logic bomb—and entering the sleek, modernist interior of the Swiss stronghold.
