Chapter 15 - Checkmate in the Alps

The sub-basement of Viktor Vance’s alpine stronghold was a high-tech fortress of humming server racks, glowing blue LED indicator lights, and industrial cooling fans that filled the room with a steady, deafening drone.
Viktor Vance—a tall, imposing man in his late fifties with sharp silver-rimmed glasses, a bespoke Brioni suit, and the cold, unblinking eyes of a seasoned Cold War survivor—stood in front of a massive monitoring console, frantically hammering keys as error messages cascaded across his screens in blinding red text.
"What do you mean, the firewall is locked?" Viktor roared in accented English, slamming his fist against the steel console. "Trace the intrusion vector! Find who's doing this!"
"Sir, we can't!" his chief technician shouted over the roar of the cooling fans, sweat pouring down his face as he stared at a blank terminal. "The encryption keys aren't just being copied—they're being permanently wiped from the master array by an external protocol override. Someone with root-level National Command clearance just initiated a total system purge!"
Viktor’s face went instantly pale. He knew only one man in the world who carried clearance high enough to execute a master system purge of a military-grade intelligence network.
"Reed," Viktor whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.
Before he could draw the golden-plated Walther PPK from his shoulder holster, the heavy steel-reinforced doors of the server room blew inward with a deafening *CRACK* of C4 breaching charges.
Smoke billowed into the room, obscuring the doorway for a fraction of a second before tactical boots crunched sharply across the shattered frame.
Marcus Reed stepped through the smoke, his Sig Sauer MPX raised, his eyes locked dead on Viktor Vance. Behind him, the four federal operators secured the perimeter in seconds, their weapons trained on the cowering technicians who immediately raised their hands into the air.
Claire walked in right behind her father, carrying her tactical tablet. She didn't look scared; she looked like a prosecutor walking into a courtroom with a slam-dunk indictment.
Viktor slowly raised his hands, a forced, nervous smile touching the corners of his thin lips as he stared at the legendary general.
"General Marcus Reed," Viktor said smoothly, his voice dropping into a register of feigned calm. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to make a house call. Especially all the way out here in neutral territory."
Marcus walked slowly across the polished concrete floor, his boots echoing with the measured cadence of a firing squad. He stopped three feet away from Viktor, lowered his weapon just an inch, and looked down at the arms dealer with absolute contempt.
"You shot at my daughter in a public library, Viktor," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "That wasn't neutral territory. That was a tactical error."
Viktor chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Business, General. Nothing personal. Preston Beaumont was a liability, and your daughter was poking around in ledgers she had no business reading. In our line of work, loose ends get tied up."
"And in my line of work," Marcus said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits, "we don't tie ends. We burn the whole rope."
Claire stepped up beside her father, tapping her tablet screen. "Master server purge is complete, Dad. All financial ledgers, offshore shell company registries, and domestic political kickback lists have been downloaded and synchronized with the Department of Justice secure cloud. Viktor’s empire is officially bankrupt, liquidated, and sealed under federal RICO statutes."
Viktor’s smile vanished completely. The polished, untouchable arms dealer suddenly looked like an old, cornered animal realizing the cage door had slammed shut for good.
"You can't do this," Viktor hissed, stepping forward. "My legal team in Geneva—"
"Your legal team in Geneva is currently receiving a visit from Interpol and Swiss federal police, acting on an emergency international warrant signed twenty minutes ago by Arthur Vance," Claire replied, flashing a brilliant, triumphant smile. "You don't have a legal team anymore, Viktor. You have a jail cell waiting with your name on it."
Marcus reached out, grabbed Viktor by the lapels of his expensive Brioni suit with one massive hand, and hoisted him off his feet until the man's toes barely touched the floor.
"You wanted a war, Viktor?" Marcus whispered, his voice vibrating with a primal, terrifying authority. "You got one. Now enjoy the peace."
With a flick of his wrist, Marcus tossed the arms dealer backward into the arms of the two federal operators, who swiftly slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Viktor’s wrists and forced him down onto his knees.
Marcus turned around, looking down at his daughter. The harsh fluorescent lights of the server room reflected off the polished metal of his tactical vest, but in his eyes, there was only a profound, unbreakable warmth.
"Well, sweetheart," Marcus said, a genuine, relaxed smile finally breaking across his rugged face. "Looks like the gardening project in Oakridge just opened up a lot of extra space. Want to go home and plant some more hydrangeas?"

Claire looked at her father, then down at the tablet in her hand—displaying a completely clean, transparent global network free of the corruption that had poisoned their lives for so long. She smiled, linking her arm through her father's sturdy forearm.
"Lead the way, General," Claire said softly. "I think we’ve finally pulled all the weeds."
