Chapter 7 - The Safehouse in Raleigh

The private veterans' medical center in Raleigh felt worlds away from the claustrophobic, corrupt corridors of Harlow County. Situated on a sprawling, wooded campus with red-brick buildings and quiet walking paths, it was a sanctuary designed for those who had served and those who loved them.
By 8:00 PM, Grandma Evelyn was resting comfortably in a sunlit recovery suite with polished hardwood floors, floral wallpaper, and a large bay window overlooking an oak grove. A private duty nurse—a real one, verified and certified by the state medical board—was checking her vital signs while humming a soft tune.
Lena sat in an armchair by the window, reviewing a thick stack of financial documents printed out by Dexter Shaw’s team.
The scope of Gerald and Paula Mercer’s financial depredations was staggering. Over six years, they hadn't just embezzled Lena’s $230,000; they had also taken out a fraudulent home equity line of credit (HELOC) against Evelyn’s historic homestead using a power of attorney that had expired three years prior. They had accumulated nearly $150,000 in unsecured debts tied to country club memberships, luxury vehicle leases, and high-risk investments in the very land development corporation headed by Judge Thaddeus Vance.
The door opened softly, and Major Thomas Vance stepped in, holding two styrofoam cups of black coffee. He handed one to Lena.
"State Attorney General's office just called," Major Vance said, pulling up a chair opposite her. "Judge Thaddeus Vance has been formally suspended from the bench pending a grand jury indictment for judicial corruption, mail fraud, and elder exploitation. And your father... well, Gerald Mercer just discovered that his bank accounts have been frozen under a federal asset preservation order."
Lena took a sip of the bitter coffee, feeling a profound, long-overdue sense of decompression settling into her shoulders. "And Paula?"
"Paula is currently trying to blame the entire operation on Gerald, claiming she was coerced," Vance smiled grimly. "Standard corporate lawyer playbook. They're already turning on each other."
Evelyn stirred in the bed, her eyes fluttering open. She looked around the bright, unfamiliar room before her gaze locked onto Lena.
"Is this base camp, Captain?" Evelyn asked with a faint, knowing smile.
Lena walked over, sitting on the edge of the mattress and taking her grandmother's hand. "It's better than a base camp, Grandma. It's home. And no one is ever taking it away from you."

Evelyn squeezed Lena's fingers with surprising strength. "Your grandfather would have been proud of you, Lena. You always did have the stubborn streak of a general."
"I learned it from the best," Lena whispered, kissing her grandmother's knuckles.
