Chapter 5 - The Emergency Boardroom Showdown

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Moretti Tower was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Seattle under a slate-grey dawn sky, while the massive, oval conference table made of polished Brazilian walnut reflected the cool, clinical glow of overhead LED panels.
At 8:55 AM on Monday morning, five members of the Moretti Logistics board of directors sat in their leather chairs, murmuring anxiously among themselves.
At the head of the table sat Julian Vance. He wore a fresh charcoal suit, his silver tie immaculate, his expression one of calm, sorrowful gravity. Beside him sat Vanessa Sterling, wearing a conservative navy pantsuit instead of her scarlet evening gown, looking pale, fragile, and utterly aggrieved—the picture of a grieving, misunderstood fiancée supporting her ailing partner through a family crisis.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian began, his voice resonant and solemn as he stood up and rested his palms on the polished wood. “As you know, Luca Moretti’s sudden medical emergency has left the company in a vulnerable position. Pursuant to the emergency restructuring resolution filed late last night, I am formally asking the board to ratify the temporary transfer of voting rights to the executive committee.”
A murmur of agreement rippled through two of the older board members—men who owed their seats to Julian’s patronage.
“I object,” a sharp, crystal-clear voice echoed from the heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the boardroom.
Every head snapped around.
The heavy doors swung wide open.
Elena Moretti walked into the room first, her posture like iron, her cane tapping rhythmically against the marble floor. Behind her walked Detective Marcus Vance, flanked by two uniformed officers. And beside them, walking with his shoulders back, his head held high, and the color slowly returning to his cheeks after a full night of proper hydration and medical stabilization, was Luca Moretti.
Julian’s face went completely, chalky white. The gold pen in his hand slipped from his fingers, clattering sharply against the walnut table.
Vanessa stood up so fast her chair screeched backward against the floor. “Luca? How... how are you...?”
“Surviving, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice deep, steady, and carrying the unmistakable weight of command that had made him a titan in the industry. He walked straight down the center of the room, every eye fixed on him, every breath in the boardroom catching in collective shock.
Julian recovered his composure faster than anyone else could have managed. He forced a strained, sickly smile to his face, stepping out from behind the head of the table.
“Luca! Thank God. The hospital said you were quarantined for exhaustion. We were just discussing contingency measures to protect the stock price while you recover—”
“Save it, Julian,” Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. He didn't sit down at the head of the table. Instead, he stood directly behind the chair Julian had occupied, resting his hands on the backrest.
Elena walked past them and took the primary seat at the head of the table, laying the green leather ledger down with a heavy, deliberate thud.
“You’re out of order, Julian,” Elena said coldly. “And so is your little accomplice in the navy suit.”
“This is absurd,” Julian sputtered, his voice rising as he tried to regain control of the room. He looked frantically at the board members. “He’s medically incapacitated! The medical waivers—”
“The medical waivers were forged using an inactive physician’s credentials from an expired Oregon license,” I said, stepping out from behind Detective Vance and placing my thick, color-coded medical journal right beside the green ledger.
I opened the journal to page forty-two, sliding a printed laboratory toxicology report across the table toward the lead independent board director, Arthur Pendelton.
“Furthermore,” I continued, my voice ringing clear across the silent boardroom, “blood and hair follicle samples drawn from Mr. Moretti last night at Swedish Medical Center confirm chronic, low-level insulin poisoning designed to mimic neurological decline and progressive dementia. The complete chain of custody, alongside security camera footage from the mansion’s ground-floor pantry showing Vanessa Sterling tampering with Mr. Moretti’s private nutritional supplements, is currently being uploaded to the Seattle Police Department’s major crimes database.”
Vanessa let out a choked, terrified sound, clutching the edge of the table as her knees buckled.
Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs from his belt.
May you like
“Vanessa Sterling, you’re under arrest for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit financial fraud. Julian Vance, step away from the table—you’re being detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement and subordination of forgery.”
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Outside the forty-second-floor windows, the Seattle sun finally broke through the gray morning clouds, casting a sharp, brilliant beam of golden light across the mahogany table—illuminating the exact moment the empire was saved.
