Chapter 17 - THE MIDNIGHT WARNING

Richard stood motionless in the hallway, the small painted brush clutched tightly in his gloved hand. The typed note felt heavy, burning into his palm like a brand.
He didn't need to guess who sent it. The Vanderbilt name was synonymous with psychological warfare—striking not just at bank accounts or legal deeds, but at the emotional core of their targets. Leaving a silent, menacing message right outside his doorstep proved that Victor and Eleanor Vanderbilt weren't backing down; they were simply shifting tactics from the courtroom to the shadows.
Slowly, Richard stepped back inside the penthouse, pulling the heavy oak door shut and throwing the deadbolt with a resounding click. He walked back into the living room, where Sarah was standing near the fireplace, her dark eyes wide with immediate concern as she saw the grim expression carved across his face.
"What is it, Richard? Who was at the door?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Richard walked over, holding out the small paintbrush and the typed note without a word. Sarah took the paper, her eyes scanning the chilling words. As the meaning sank in, the color drained completely from her face.
"Vanderbilt," Sarah whispered, her hand shaking as she lowered the note. "He was at our door? How did he bypass the building security?"
"It wasn't Victor," Richard said, his voice cold and hard as steel. "It was his sister, Eleanor. She’s the one who operates in the shadows. They want us to feel unsafe here. They want us to believe that no matter how high these glass walls go, they can still reach us."
Sarah looked toward the hallway leading to Lily’s bedroom, a wave of deep, protective terror washing over her. "Lily... what if they try to target Lily?"
In an instant, Richard crossed the room, pulling Sarah into his arms and holding her tightly against his chest. "Listen to me, Sarah. Look at me." He waited until her dark, frightened eyes met his fierce blue ones. "Nothing—absolutely nothing—will ever happen to Lily. Or to you. I have private security stationed in the lobby around the clock, and I’m doubling the detail starting tonight. Eleanor thinks she can play psychological games with me? I’m going to end this once and for all."
"Richard, no," Sarah protested, resting her hands against his chest. "Don't play their game. If you retaliate directly, they'll drag you down into the mud with them. That's what they want—to make you as ruthless as they are."
"I'm not going to be ruthless, Sarah," Richard replied softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "I'm going to be protective. There's a difference."
The rest of the night passed in a tense, watchful silence. While Sarah slept fitfully in the master bedroom, checking on Lily twice an hour, Richard sat in the dark living room by the dying embers of the fire, his laptop open on his knees. He wasn't reviewing building permits or corporate stock options this time. He was pulling up private investigative files, financial tracking logs, and deep-dive background dossiers on Eleanor Vanderbilt.

By 4:00 AM, Richard found what he was looking for—a smoking gun regarding a massive, unregistered acquisition of municipal land permits in the Eastside district that Eleanor had orchestrated using illegal offshore shell companies. It was federal-level securities and real estate fraud.
Richard closed the laptop, a cold, calculated smile touching his lips. Eleanor wanted to play in the shadows? He was going to drag her right into the blinding light of a federal courtroom before the sun came up.
