Chapter 20 - THE HOLIDAY HEARTH

The snow fell softly outside the large bay windows of the penthouse, casting a peaceful, muffled quiet over the city below. Inside, the living room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a towering Christmas tree draped in twinkling lights, handmade paper ornaments, and shimmering ribbons.

A roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace, filling the room with the rich, comforting scent of cedar and pine.

Richard sat on the plush sofa, holding a steaming mug of hot cocoa as he watched Lily meticulously arrange a row of handmade reindeer figurines along the mantelpiece. Sarah sat beside him, leaning her head comfortably against his shoulder, her hand resting over his.

"Can you believe it’s been a full year since that day at the community center?" Sarah murmured softly, gazing into the flickering flames. "It feels like a lifetime ago."

"It was a lifetime ago," Richard replied, his voice deep and warm. "Before that day, I didn't know what I was building. I was just stacking bricks in the dark."

Sarah smiled, turning her head to press a gentle kiss to his lips. "And now?"

"Now, the foundation is solid. The walls are strong. And everyone is exactly where they belong."

Just then, the front door chimed softly, and the sounds of laughter and holiday carols drifted in as Marcus Vance and a few close friends from the community center arrived bearing pies, warm cider, and joyful holiday wishes to fill the open rooms of their home.

Richard looked around the living room—at the roaring fire, the glowing tree, the laughter echoing down the hallway, and the two souls who had completely transformed his world. He didn't need spreadsheets, corporate empires, or isolated fortresses anymore. He had everything he would ever need right here.

As Richard stood up to welcome their friends into the warmth of their home, his phone suddenly buzzed sharply against his belt.

Frowning slightly, he pulled the device from his pocket. The screen displayed a text message from an unknown, encrypted number originating from overseas.

Richard unlocked the screen and looked down at the single line of text displayed across the glowing display:

May you like

*The federal indictment was just a temporary setback, Richard. The foundation may look solid on the surface... but every empire eventually has a weak point. See you in the spring.*

Richard’s blue eyes narrowed as the glowing screen abruptly faded to black, leaving him standing in the warm, festive glow of the holiday hearth, with the shadow of a new, unseen storm quietly gathering on the distant horizon...
