Chapter 12 - The Final Audit

The fallout of Brandon’s financial collapse swept through the local business community with the speed of a wildfire. Within a week, the financial pages of the regional papers featured a sprawling exposé detailing how a once-prominent construction magnate had attempted to squirrel away millions in offshore accounts while hiding behind shell corporations and fraudulent subcontractors.
My name wasn't mentioned once in the articles. To the public, I was simply the resilient female CEO of *Apex Structural Solutions*, a woman who had quietly acquired several major municipal contracts while her competitors self-destructed under the weight of their own corruption.
On a quiet Friday afternoon, I stood on the front porch of our Victorian home, watching Caleb unload bags of groceries from the back of his truck. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber and bruised violet.
"You know," Caleb said, slamming the truck tailgate shut and walking up the steps with a bag of organic apples in hand, "if someone told me five years ago that we’d be running the biggest construction firm in the state while your ex-husband was facing five to ten years for federal fraud, I would have asked what brand of whiskey you were drinking."
I took an apple from the bag, turning it over in my hand. "People who build their lives on quicksand always think the foundation is solid until the ground starts shaking, Caleb. I didn't ruin Brandon. I just stopped propping him up."
"Amen to that," Caleb said, leaning against the porch railing. "Speaking of foundations... what are your plans for tomorrow? Owen’s soccer team made the regional finals, and I promised him I’d bring the heavy-duty tailgate grill."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," I smiled, feeling a profound sense of lightness settle deep into my bones.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting another corporate update or a scheduling ping from my executive assistant. Instead, it was an unknown, local text message.

*“Elena. Please. Just five minutes of your time. I’m outside your gate. I have nowhere else to go.”*
I stared at the screen for a long, quiet second. The number was blocked, but the desperate, unhinged formatting of the text was unmistakable. Brandon.
