Chapter 20 - The Zurich Proposition

The private jet provided by Vance Capital Partners smelled faintly of aged leather, expensive espresso, and the crisp, clean scent of high-altitude clouds. As the Gulfstream G650 climbed smoothly through the atmosphere, banking toward the Atlantic, I gazed down through the oval window at the shrinking coastline of the United States.

Sitting across the aisle from me, Caleb was methodically reviewing a stack of architectural blueprints on his tablet, his brow furrowed in intense concentration. Beside him, Leo was fast asleep, his head resting comfortably on a plush velvet pillow, clutching a brand-new sketch pad Julian Vance had thoughtfully provided before takeoff.

Julian himself sat opposite us, nursing a cup of black coffee. He looked across the aisle, catching my eye with a knowing, approving look. "You haven't touched your coffee, Elena. Still adjusting to the altitude, or are you wondering what awaits you in Zurich?"

"A bit of both," I admitted, setting my ceramic cup down on the polished mahogany tray table. "Moving Apex’s primary operations to Switzerland overnight isn't just a relocation; it’s an entire corporate reinvention. The European architectural board is notoriously rigid. They don't care about past American accolades; they care about sustainability metrics, carbon-neutral material sourcing, and structural longevity that can withstand centuries."

"Which is precisely why they chose you," Julian said smoothly, leaning back against his seat. "While other firms rely on flashy glass facades that crack under thermal stress, your designs incorporate foundational elasticity. You learned that the hard way, didn't you? Building things that look fragile on the outside, but possess an unyielding core of steel underneath."

I looked down at my hands, remembering the years I had spent quietly propping up Brandon’s failing engineering firm, redesigning his flawed blueprints late at night while he was out entertaining clients—or rather, entertaining Victoria. Every bridge he claimed as his own, every commercial tower he slapped his family name onto, had been structurally stabilized by my hand. He had taken the credit, the money, and the public adoration, leaving me with nothing but the illusion of dependence.

Until the day he handed me that divorce paper, believing he was casting me out into the cold winter. He hadn't realized that by freeing me from his dead weight, he had unleashed the very mind that kept his fragile empire from collapsing years earlier.

"When we land in Zurich," I said, my voice hardening with resolute focus, "we go straight to the municipal planning commission. I want the site surveys for the Alpine tunnel intersection on my desk before dinner."

Julian smiled, a genuine flash of admiration crossing his features. "That is why I backed you, Elena. Brandon Hayes spent his entire life looking for a trophy wife to decorate his arm. He never realized he was sleeping next to the master architect of the entire financial district."
