Chapter 14 - The Anonymous Package

The next morning, the tension in my house was palpable. I had arranged for an elite security detail to monitor the property around the clock, keeping Ellie and my mother safely indoors while I investigated the lingering threat.

At 9:00 AM, a standard delivery van pulled up to the front gate. The driver dropped off a single, plain cardboard box addressed directly to me, marked with high-priority courier labels. The private security team scanned the package for explosives and chemical agents before bringing it inside my study wearing heavy protective gloves.

"Clear," the lead security officer said, setting the heavy box on my desk. "No hazardous materials, no triggers. Just physical documents."

I dismissed the detail with a wave of my hand, pulled on a pair of latex gloves, and carefully sliced through the heavy packing tape with a utility knife. Inside lay a thick stack of printed financial statements, handwritten notes, and a digital flash drive.

I picked up the top paper. It wasn't from Chloe. It was a corporate ledger from an international logistics firm—the exact firm Trent’s former business associates used to funnel dirty money across European borders. But scrawled across the margin in hurried, frantic handwriting was a message addressed to me:

*“You think you took down my husband, Mara? You only cut off the tail of the dragon. The men funding Trent are watching you right now. They know where your daughter goes to school. They know where your mother lives. If you don't drop the international asset forfeiture order by Monday morning, your family pays the price.”*

My breath caught in my throat. This wasn't Chloe’s petty family drama anymore. By dismantling Trent’s local operation, I had accidentally kicked a hornet's nest belonging to a much larger, highly dangerous international syndicate that used small-time laundering fronts like Trent’s shop as mere stepping stones.

I plugged the flash drive into my secure government terminal. A folder opened instantly, containing high-resolution surveillance photographs taken over the last forty-eight hours.

Photos of my mother walking through the local grocery store. Photos of Ellie stepping off her school bus. And finally, a photograph of me, sitting right here at my office desk, taken through the reinforced glass from a rooftop across the street just hours ago.

They weren't just threatening me. They were hunting me.
