Chapter 22 - A Knock on the Wrong Door

Dawn broke over the estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the dew-kissed lawn. I hadn't slept a wink. Every page of the hidden ledger had been scanned, cross-referenced, and uploaded to secure federal servers. Armed with irrefutable proof of systemic corruption reaching far beyond Chloe and Trent’s petty greed, I prepared to make my next move. But before I could dispatch the federal tactical units to execute the arrests, a commotion at the outer perimeter security checkpoint interrupted my morning coffee.
Through the security monitors on my desk, I watched a luxury sedan aggressively ram its way through the visitor parking barrier, screeching to a halt right in front of the main fountain. The doors flew open, and out stepped Chloe, her hair disheveled, her designer sunglasses missing, and her face twisted in a mask of sheer, unadulterated panic. Behind her stumbled Trent, his suit wrinkled and stained, looking like a man who had realized too late that the ship was sinking and he had no life jacket. They weren't here for a family reunion. They were here because their digital banking apps had just frozen, and federal asset forfeiture notices had hit their phones simultaneously.
I calmly walked out onto the front porch, my hands resting in the pockets of my tailored blazer. I didn't say a word as they stormed up the marble steps, their footsteps echoing desperately against the stone. Chloe reached the top first, her chest heaving, her eyes wild with furious disbelief. "You!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger straight at my face. "You did this! You planned this entire thing from the start, didn't you? Playing the meek little maid, cleaning federal offices while you were quietly building a case against your own family!" I raised an eyebrow, letting out a calm, chilling chuckle that cut through her hysterical rant like a scalpel. "My own family, Chloe?" I replied, my voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute authority. "You sold me out for a five-year joke, treated me like dirt, and used my workplace as your personal piggy bank. You thought I was scrubbing toilets. I was scrubbing the rot off the federal payroll. And today, the housecleaning is finally finished."
