Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

By 6:00 AM the next morning, the house was dead silent.

I gently woke my mother up, helped her pack her bags, and led her quietly out to my car.

"Elena, where are we going?" Mom asked nervously as I started the engine. "Are you coming with me?"

"I'm taking you to a boutique hotel downtown, Mom," I said, putting a hand over hers. "I paid for a full week. I want you to get a massage, relax, and let me handle this. You will never have to see Ethan or his family again."

"Elena... what are you planning to do?" she asked, worry etched into her forehead.

"I'm going to take back everything they stole from you," I said coldly.

After dropping Mom off at the luxury hotel, I drove straight to the downtown precinct to meet with Detective Miller, a high-ranking investigator I had worked with on previous corporate fraud audits, alongside my personal attorney, Sarah Lin.

In a quiet conference room, I laid out the loan documents, the title deeds, and the bank transfer records showing the $180,000 originating solely from my mother’s bank account.

Detective Miller examined the forged loan modification page under a magnifying light. "The notary stamp belongs to Marcus Vance. Is he related to Ethan?"

"He's Ethan’s uncle," Sarah replied, dropping a thick folder onto the table. "We just ran a background check on Marcus Vance. His notary license was suspended two years ago for fraudulent property transfers in another county. He’s been operating illegally."

Detective Miller leaned back, rubbing his chin. "This is grand larceny, identity theft, and mortgage fraud, Elena. If Ethan and his mother submit this forged refinancing application to the state bank to pull out the $150,000 equity, it becomes a major federal felony."

"When are they submitting it?" Sarah asked me.

"Ethan told his mother last night that the closing paperwork for the equity draw would be finalized this evening at 6:00 PM at our house," I revealed. "They invited Marcus Vance over to 'celebrate' over dinner."

Sarah smiled darkly. "They think you're broken, Elena. They think you're hiding in the basement crying."

"Let them think that," I said, standing up. "What do we need to do to catch them red-handed?"

Detective Miller stood up too. "I’ll have a team of fraud investigators parked down the street from your house at 5:30 PM. The moment Marcus Vance notarizes that forged loan application and Ethan signs as the primary beneficiary, we step in."

"No," I corrected, looking Detective Miller in the eye. "I want Diane to sign it too. She said this house belongs to both families. I want to make sure the entire family pays for what they did."
