Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Truth

Six months later.

The courthouse hallway was quiet as I sat beside my mother and Sarah Lin.

Today was the final sentencing hearing for Ethan Vance and Diane Vance. They had both taken guilty pleas to avoid a lengthy federal trial.

When the bailiff escorted Ethan into the courtroom, I barely recognized him. The sharp suits, styled hair, and arrogant smirk were completely gone. He wore an orange jail jumpsuit, his wrists chained to his waist. He looked exhausted, defeated, and significantly thinner.

Diane sat beside her public defender, dressed in plain prison garb, her eyes red and sunken.

The judge pounded his gavel. "In the matter of the State v. Ethan Vance and Diane Vance, on the charges of grand larceny, mortgage fraud, and criminal conspiracy..."

The prosecutor stood up and read a statement detailing how Ethan had systematically targeted my mother’s life savings, gaslit me into submission, forged legal documents, and attempted to steal a $500,000 property out from under us.

When the judge asked Ethan if he had anything to say before sentencing, Ethan stood up, his chains rattling. He looked back at me sitting in the gallery.

"Elena..." Ethan’s voice cracked. "I'm... I'm so sorry. I let my mother and brother push me into doing things... I was desperate to impress them. I loved you. Please..."

I looked at him with complete indifference. There were no lingering feelings of pain or affection. Just the calm realization that I had narrowly escaped spending my life with a coward.

The judge cut Ethan off sternly. "Mr. Vance, blaming your family while actively forging signatures and stealing from a woman who gave you a roof over your head shows a complete lack of remorse. You took advantage of kindness and trust."

The judge slammed his gavel down.

"Ethan Vance is sentenced to 6 years in state prison, followed by 3 years of probation, and is ordered to pay $180,000 in full restitution to Martha Vance."

"Diane Vance is sentenced to 3 years in state prison for criminal conspiracy."

"Marcus Vance's notary license is permanently revoked, and he is sentenced to 8 years in state prison."

As the guards led Ethan and Diane away in chains, Diane locked eyes with me. For the first time, there was no arrogance left in her face—only absolute ruin. Ethan looked back one last time, tears streaming down his cheeks, but I turned my face away.

They had built their foundation on greed and deception, and it had completely collapsed upon them.
