Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDIT

At 2:15 AM, the executive penthouse office on the top floor of Rosehaven Women’s Medical Center was pitch black, save for the pale blue glow of computer monitors reflecting off the imported mahogany desk.
Dr. Julian Reed sat alone in the dark, his white lab coat draped over the back of his executive leather chair, nursing a glass of twenty-year-old single malt scotch. He looked relaxed, triumphant, and utterly untouchable.
On his desk, his smartphone buzzed softly against the blotter.
He didn't pick it up immediately. He took another slow sip of his scotch, smiling to himself as he replayed the afternoon board meeting in his head. The regional investors had practically fallen over themselves praising his visionary leadership. The hospital’s valuation had crossed three hundred million dollars. And tomorrow by noon, his life would be absolute perfection: a brand-new healthy son to cement his legacy as a devoted family man, millions of dollars in untraceable venture capital funneled safely into his offshore accounts, and a grieving, tragic backstory about a beloved wife who tragically succumbed to an unforeseen amniotic fluid embolism on the operating table.
A brilliant script, Julian thought to himself, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. No loose ends. No witnesses. Just absolute, unblemished victory.
He reached out and picked up his phone to check the notification.
It wasn't a text message. It was an automated security alert from the hospital’s central financial server:
WARNING: Primary operational line of credit (Account ending in #4092 - Reed Medical Holdings General Operating) has experienced a sudden, automated freeze. Administrative override denied.
Julian frowned, sitting up straighter in his chair. He tapped the screen, opening the secure banking portal linked to his executive profile.
He entered his passcode.
The screen flashed a glaring red warning banner:
ERROR CODE 503: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY INSTITUTIONAL TRUSTEE. PENDING FORENSIC AUDIT.
"What is this nonsense?" Julian muttered aloud, his brow furrowing as a prickle of cold sweat broke out across the back of his neck.
He tapped the screen again, trying to access the secondary payroll and reserve accounts.
ACCESS DENIED. USER CREDENTIALS REVOKED.
"Revoked? By whose authority?" Julian snapped, his voice echoing sharply in the empty penthouse office.
He quickly dialed the direct private line of the hospital’s chief financial officer, Arthur Vance. The phone rang once, twice, three times—and then went straight to voicemail.
Julian slammed his hand down on the mahogany desk. "Pick up your damn phone, Arthur!"
He dialed the head of hospital legal counsel. Voicemail.
He dialed the director of human resources. Voicemail.
Panic, cold and sharp, began to claw its way up his throat. Julian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the plush carpet. He rushed across the dark office to his private computer terminal, jamming his executive security keycard into the USB port to override the server block.
The monitor flickered. The screen displayed a single, pristine white PDF document stamped with a heavy crimson seal:
NOTICE OF EMERGENCY BOARD OF DIRECTORS AUDIT & ASSET SEIZURE.
Julian’s eyes raced across the text, the color draining entirely from his face until he looked like a corpse under fluorescent light.
To: Dr. Julian Reed, Executive Director, Rosehaven Women’s Medical Center. From: The Vane Foundation Global Asset Trust.Subject: Notice of Default, Embezzlement Investigation, and Immediate Revocation of Executive Authority.
You are hereby notified that as of 2:00 AM on this date, an exhaustive forensic audit conducted by the Vane Foundation has uncovered systematic misappropriation of institutional funds, fraudulent partnership disclosures, and unauthorized personal diversion of venture capital totaling $14.2 million. Furthermore, active investigations into medical malpractice cover-ups under your direct supervision have been transmitted to the Massachusetts State Medical Board and federal authorities.
Your executive badge, building access codes, and administrative privileges are permanently revoked effective immediately.
An emergency quorum of the Board of Directors will convene at 8:00 AM sharp in the VIP Surgical Amphitheater to formally terminate your contract and initiate criminal proceedings.
Julian stared at the monitor, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. His hands shook so violently he dropped his scotch glass, shattering it against the floor with a sharp, explosive crash that echoed through the penthouse suite.
"No," he whispered, backing away from the desk as if the computer screen were about to detonate. "No, this is impossible. The Vane Foundation is an anonymous Swiss trust! They don't audit hospitals like Rosehaven! Who authorized this? Who has the authority to freeze my accounts?!"
He grabbed his phone again, his fingers slipping against the glass screen as he dialed emergency security dispatch.
"This is Dr. Reed! Director Reed!" he shouted the moment the desk answered. "I want security to lock down the executive server room immediately! Someone has hacked the financial terminal—"
“I’m sorry, Dr. Reed,” the security dispatcher’s voice came back, startlingly calm and devoid of its usual subservient warmth. “We’ve received new orders from corporate oversight. Your executive privileges have been terminated. We cannot dispatch personnel to your location.”
"Terminated?!" Julian roared, losing all semblance of his polished composure. "I am corporate oversight! I built this hospital! Send security to my office right now or you'll all be fired before sunrise!"
“Your badge is no longer active, sir,” the dispatcher replied flatly. “Have a good night.”
Click.
The line went dead.

Julian stood alone in the dark, surrounded by the wreckage of his shattered glass and the glowing red error messages on his computer screen. The walls of his magnificent empire were suddenly closing in on him, suffocating him with the terrifying realization that he had never been the king of Rosehaven at all.
He had merely been a tenant. And the landlord had finally come to collect.
