Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF REED MEDICAL

While Claire recovered peacefully in a newly renovated, sunlit recovery suite surrounded by fresh white lilies and genuine medical care, the fallout of Julian Reed’s downfall struck Boston’s medical and financial circles like a Category 5 hurricane.

By Monday morning, every major news outlet in New England plastered Julian’s face across their front pages and morning broadcasts.

“FALLEN CEDAR: Boston Celebrity Surgeon Dr. Julian Reed Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Hospital Fraud and Conspiracy Scandal.”

The headlines were merciless. Investigative journalists who had previously praised Julian as a visionary healthcare pioneer now scrambled to uncover the sordid reality behind his polished facade. Financial reporters broke down the complex web of shell companies, embezzled Vane Foundation grants, and falsified patient safety records that had allowed Reed Medical Holdings to maintain its illusion of success.

Inside the executive boardroom on the fifth floor of Rosehaven—the very room where Julian had once sat in the dark sipping twenty-year-old scotch and plotting his escape—an emergency press conference was underway.

I sat at the head of the polished mahogany conference table, flanked by Marcus Vance and the newly appointed interim hospital director, Dr. Arthur Thorne. Microphones from dozens of media networks bristled across the wood, and camera flashes strobed relentlessly in our faces.

"Good morning," I began, my voice clear, steady, and carrying the quiet gravity of absolute authority. "Effective immediately, Reed Medical Holdings has been dissolved as an independent corporate entity. All operational assets, research endowments, and clinical facilities are now under the direct stewardship of the Vane Foundation Global Trust."

A reporter from the Boston Globe shot his hand up instantly. "Madam Chair! Rumors have circulated that Dr. Reed was not only embezzling funds, but that the hospital leadership was aware of severe internal misconduct and patient safety violations. How did this go unchecked for so long?"

I met the reporter’s gaze without flinching.

"When a man builds a house of cards on a foundation of deceit, intimidation, and fear, he relies on silence to keep the structure standing," I answered evenly. "For too long, vulnerable patients inside these walls were silenced by threats, administrative intimidation, and the illusion of absolute executive power. That era at Rosehaven is permanently over."

Another reporter shouted from the back. "What about Dr. Reed’s pending criminal charges? Is there any truth to allegations regarding conspiracy and domestic endangerment?"

Marcus Vance stepped forward to the microphone, placing a thick folder of certified legal documents on the podium.

"Federal prosecutors have officially filed ten felony counts against Julian Reed," Marcus announced crisply. "Including wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. Bail has been denied due to flight risk. He is currently being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility awaiting federal arraignment."

The room erupted into a cacophony of overlapping questions, camera shutters, and urgent whispers.

I didn't stay to answer them all. I gave one final nod to Dr. Thorne, stood up from the head of the table, and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the media to feast on the remains of the golden boy who had dared to think he could conquer a queen.
