Chapter 23 - THE VISITOR AT THE CURB

Parked right at the edge of my driveway, directly beneath the shade of the sprawling oak tree, sat an obsidian-black Mercedes Maybach with tinted windows that absorbed the morning sunlight like a bottomless void. As I watched, the rear door of the luxury sedan swung open with a smooth, mechanical hiss, and a tall, silver-haired man stepped out onto the asphalt. He wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit that radiated quiet authority, his posture straight and unyielding despite the passing of years. Even from a distance of fifty feet, the resemblance was undeniable—he possessed the same sharp jawline, the same piercing hazel eyes, and the same commanding aura that had once defined Harold Miller, but without the cruel, predatory smirk that had poisoned our family tree. It was Arthur Miller. The ghost of the family had returned from the dead, and he was standing right outside my front door. My mind raced through a dozen frantic scenarios. Had Arthur come to reclaim the empire? Had he sent me the encrypted file to use as a battering ram against my father and Vance? I walked slowly toward the front door, my hand resting on the brass handle, feeling the cool metal beneath my palm. Before I could even turn the lock, the doorbell chimed—a deep, resonant two-tone chime that echoed through the quiet hallway. I pulled the door open, the crisp morning air rushing in to meet me. Arthur stood there, his hands clasped neatly behind his back, a faint, melancholic smile touching the corners of his lips. "Hello, Julian," he said, his voice deep, gravelly, and carrying an undeniable aristocratic weight. "It seems we both have unfinished business with the men who stole our lives." I stared at him, utterly speechless for a long moment, before stepping aside to let my long-lost great-uncle cross the threshold into my home.
