Chapter 14 - The Chase in the Mist

The morning sun gave way to a heavy, rolling fog that swept down from the northern hills, wrapping our neighborhood in a damp, gray shroud. Inside our home, the television played softly in the background while Olivia played blocks with Leo on the rug. I paced slowly near the front window, staring out into the misty street, my mind racing with the images of what was undoubtedly unfolding miles away.

According to Miller's subsequent text updates, Eleanor's desperate bid for freedom had not gone according to plan. Instead of slipping away quietly to her private charter, she had realized that the financial accounts were frozen and her pilot had refused to take off without verified international wire clearance. In a fit of paranoid rage, she had abandoned her luxury sedan at the edge of the tarmac and commandeered a rental vehicle, driving blindly down the interstate toward the state border.

The local highway patrol had picked up her tail near mile marker 42, initiating a slow-speed pursuit that was quickly escalating as she refused to pull over.

My phone buzzed continuously—not with calls from Eleanor, but with news alerts scrolling across local media apps. *“BREAKING: High-speed pursuit involving prominent local estate figure underway on Interstate 95 North. Authorities report suspect refusing to yield…”*

Reporters had already managed to piece together who was in the vehicle. The name *Eleanor Brooks* was flashing across digital news banners, accompanied by file photos of her standing proudly beside charity boards and philanthropic galas—images of a woman who had spent decades meticulously constructing an untouchable public persona, now unraveling in real-time across television screens nationwide.

"Ethan, come sit down," Olivia called softly from the living room floor, her voice cutting through the hum of my anxious thoughts. She looked up, her eyes full of calm, steady strength. "Pacing isn't going to change the outcome. What's happening out there is out of our hands. We did our part. We told the truth."

I walked over and sat down beside her on the rug, pulling Leo into my arms. He giggled, grabbing a wooden block and trying to stack it clumsily on top of mine. The innocence of his world—untouched by greed, manipulation, or cruelty—was a stark, beautiful contrast to the chaotic storm raging outside our walls.

"You're right," I sighed, kissing the top of my son's soft hair. "It's just surreal to watch the entire foundation she built crumble into dust so fast."

"People who build their lives on exploitation always think their walls are made of stone," Olivia said, her gaze fixed on the stacking blocks. "They don't realize they've been building out of sand until the tide comes in."

Before I could reply, the television broadcast in the background interrupted its regular programming with a blaring emergency alert tone. The anchor's voice was tense and rapid.

*“We interrupt this broadcast with a live update from the I-95 corridor. State troopers and federal marshals have successfully boxed in the vehicle driven by Eleanor Brooks near the county line. Traffic is currently at a complete standstill as tactical units approach the vehicle. Stay tuned as we bring you live aerial footage of the scene…”*
