Chapter 15 - The End of the Line

The aerial camera shot flickered on the television screen, showing a bird's-eye view of a silver luxury SUV wedged between two state trooper cruisers on the shoulder of the highway. Flashing red and blue lights painted the asphalt in harsh, rhythmic pulses against the thick morning fog.

For a long, tense moment, nothing moved. The doors of the SUV remained closed, and the police units held their positions, weapons drawn, waiting for the suspect to surrender.

I held Leo tightly against my chest, my eyes locked on the screen. Olivia sat beside me, her hand resting firmly on my knee. We didn't speak. The entire country—or at least everyone who had ever been touched, manipulated, or silenced by Eleanor Brooks—was watching through that camera lens.

Finally, the driver's side door of the SUV slowly swung open.

Eleanor emerged into the harsh light of the police cruisers. Even from the air, her posture was stiff, defiant, and unmistakably proud. She didn't put her hands up immediately; instead, she stood beside the open door, staring defiantly at the ring of armed officers surrounding her, as if expecting her sheer force of will to magically part them like the Red Sea.

When the reality of the situation finally penetrated her denial—when a federal marshal stepped forward with handcuffs raised and ordered her to drop to her knees—her posture finally collapsed. The rigid, unyielding matriarch seemed to shrink before our eyes, her shoulders slumping as the cold steel cuffs clicked into place around her wrists.

The television anchor's voice droned on in the background, detailing the charges: grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and interstate flight to avoid prosecution.

I let out a long, slow breath—a breath I felt like I had been holding since that terrible Friday afternoon when I walked into my mother's banquet hall and found my exhausted wife scrubbing dishes with a feverish baby in her arms.

"It's over," I whispered, the words carrying an immense, weightless relief.

"No," Olivia corrected gently, looking up at me with a serene, beautiful smile. "It's just beginning."

The screen cut back to the studio anchors as police escorted Eleanor into the back of a squad car, her face shielded from the cameras by a dark jacket. I turned off the television with the remote, plunging the living room back into a quiet, peaceful stillness.

Later that afternoon, Detective Miller called to confirm the details. Eleanor had been booked into the county detention center without bail, given her status as an extreme flight risk. Her legal team was scrambling, but without access to her hidden offshore accounts—which had been frozen by international banking regulators—she could no longer afford the army of high-priced attorneys who had kept her shielded for decades.

"The arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning," Miller said over the phone. "You won't be required to attend in person unless the prosecution calls you for preliminary testimony, but I wanted you to know she's securely behind bars."

"Thank you, Detective," I replied. "For everything."

"Just doing my job, Ethan. Take care of your family."
