Chapter 6 - A New Legacy

Three weeks later, the autumn sun washed over the sprawling emerald lawns of the Prescott estate in Savannah, casting long, golden shadows across the grand waterfront veranda. The chaotic, antiseptic world of St. Jude Memorial Hospital felt like a distant lifetime away. Here, the air smelled of salt water, blooming magnolias, and the crisp promise of a new season.

Brooke sat comfortably in a deep teak rocking chair on the veranda, gently swaying back and forth. Resting against her chest in a soft cashmere sling was her daughter, sleeping peacefully with tiny, rhythmic breaths, while her son rested in a matching bassinet nearby, watched over by a pair of doting nurses and a grandfather who had completely redesigned his entire corporate schedule to be home by four o'clock every single afternoon.

The legal fallout from Garrett Hale’s downfall had been swift and merciless. Pacific Harbor Freight’s internal audit board had uncovered three years of systemic embezzlement, resulting in federal indictments not only against Garrett, but also against Kendra Mercer, who had acted as an accessory in funneling corporate funds into shell companies. Garrett’s corporate career was incinerated; his assets were seized to pay restitution; and he was currently sitting in a federal detention center awaiting trial, utterly abandoned by the mistress who had only loved him for the stolen power he promised.

Kendra had tried calling Brooke twice during the second week, weeping hysterically about how Garrett had lied to her, how she had a baby to raise, and how she needed financial help. Brooke hadn't even bothered to listen to the voicemails; she had simply forwarded them directly to Marcus Vance with a single instruction: *Handle it.*

As for Brooke, her legal name had been fully restored to Brooke Prescott, and her twins—Leo and Maya—bore their rightful family name with pride, protected by a billion-dollar trust that ensured their future was untouchable.

“Penny for your thoughts, sweetheart,” Walter Prescott’s deep, warm voice broke through the quiet afternoon hum. He stepped out onto the veranda, holding two cups of freshly brewed coffee, handing one to Brooke before pulling up a matching rocking chair beside her.

Brooke took a sip of the warm, rich coffee, looking out over the sparkling expanse of the river where massive container ships bearing the Prescott logo sailed serenely toward the open ocean.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” Brooke said softly, a serene smile touching her lips as she gazed down at her sleeping daughter. “A month ago, I thought I was trapped in a corner with nowhere to turn. I thought I had to endure the cruelty because I had chosen wrong.”

“You didn’t choose wrong, Brooke,” Walter said firmly, reaching over to rest his weathered hand gently over hers. “You made a mistake, yes—you fell for a wolf in a tailored suit. But you survived. And when it mattered most, you didn't break. You woke up.”

“I’ll never let anyone make me feel small again, Dad,” Brooke said, her voice steady, filled with an unshakeable, luminous power. “For the first time in my life, I know exactly who I am, and I know exactly what I’m worth.”

Walter smiled, his ice-blue eyes shining with an immense, profound pride. “Good. Because starting Monday, the board of directors at Pacific Harbor Freight needs a new executive vice president of global procurement and strategic development. I hear there’s a brilliant analyst who used to run the department from her kitchen table. Think she’s ready to take the reins?”

Brooke looked out over the river, watching the sunlight dance across the water, feeling the warm weight of her children resting against her heart. The past was buried, the debt was paid, and her true empire had only just begun.

“Tell the board to clear my office, Dad,” Brooke smiled, lifting her coffee cup in a quiet, triumphant toast. “I’ll be there on Monday.”
