Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Takeover

The morning air of downtown Seattle was crisp and biting as Brooke Prescott stepped out of the sleek, black armored Mercedes-Benz S-Class that idled in front of the towering glass-and-steel monolith of Pacific Harbor Freight headquarters. It was a Monday morning, exactly twenty-one days after she had given birth in a sterile hospital room while her life was being systematically dismantled by a man who thought he could buy her silence with pocket change. Today, she was no longer the quiet, invisible woman who consulted from a kitchen table while her husband took all the credit. Today, she walked through the polished granite lobby as the newly appointed Executive Vice President of Global Procurement and Strategic Development.

Her tailored navy blue bespoke pantsuit clung to her newly reclaimed frame with sharp, authoritative precision. Her auburn hair was swept back into a sleek, immaculate chignon that emphasized the high, sharp cheekbones she shared with her father. As she crossed the cavernous lobby, the security guards who had once merely nodded politely now snapped to attention, their eyes widening in sudden, sharp recognition. Word had moved through the corporate grapevine with terrifying speed over the past three weeks. The fall of Garrett Hale—once the golden boy of the sales division, now awaiting federal trial in a Pierce County detention facility—had sent shockwaves through the entire maritime logistics industry. But the whispered rumors that the new executive taking over the department was none other than Walter Prescott’s daughter had sent a completely different kind of current through the executive suites.

Brooke walked with a rhythmic, measured stride, her heels clicking sharply against the Italian marble floors. In her left hand, she carried a structured leather portfolio containing her strategic roadmap for the upcoming fiscal quarter; in her right, she held a secure smartphone that pulsed silently with messages from her father, checking in from the Savannah estate where the twins were safely sleeping under the watchful eyes of trusted nurses and pediatric specialists. Leo and Maya were thriving, growing stronger and heavier by the day, entirely insulated from the toxic wreckage of their father's ambition.

The private executive elevator carried her silently to the forty-second floor. When the brushed-steel doors slid open, Marcus Vance, the company’s chief general counsel, was already waiting for her in the hallway, holding a fresh stack of compliance audits and asset seizure documents.

“Good morning, Brooke,” Marcus said, offering a rare, approving smile as he fell into step beside her down the sunlit corridor. “The executive committee has been briefed. Half of them are thrilled to see a Prescott back at the helm of strategic development, and the other half are quietly terrified that you’re going to audit their expense reports all the way back to the Clinton administration.”

“They only need to worry if they’ve been double-dipping like Garrett did,” Brooke replied, her voice steady, cool, and devoid of any hesitation. “Where do we stand on the Beacon Communications subsidiary audit? Have we frozen the remaining shell accounts?”

“Completely,” Marcus said, opening his leather folio as they approached the double mahogany doors of the executive boardroom. “Every dollar Garrett siphoned out of the procurement budget through Kendra Mercer’s fake marketing agency has been flagged and attached by federal asset forfeiture officers. Kendra’s bank accounts in the Caymans have been subpoenaed. She tried to file for a public defender yesterday morning after her private landlord evicted her from her luxury condo. Her entire life of luxury built on embezzlement has evaporated.”

Brooke paused with her hand resting on the polished brass handle of the boardroom door. A faint, bitter memory flickered across her mind—the image of Garrett standing beside her hospital bed, throwing a pathetic $250,000 check onto her blanket, acting as though he held all the power in the universe. He had thought he was a kingmaker. Instead, he had been nothing more than a temporary tenant in a world built by her family, a man so fundamentally hollow that he mistook cruelty for strength.

“Let’s go inside, Marcus,” Brooke said softly, her eyes flashing with a bright, crystalline brilliance. “It’s time to show these directors how a real supply chain is run.”

The heavy mahogany doors swung open wide. Inside, the massive glass boardroom table was surrounded by twelve senior vice directors, all of whom turned their heads in unison as Brooke entered the room. Walter Prescott sat at the far end of the table, his arms folded across his chest, a quiet, ferocious pride burning in his ice-blue eyes. As Brooke took her seat at the head of the table, the corporate empire that had once been used to cage her suddenly felt like an instrument of absolute, unshakeable justice.
