Chapter 2 - The Terminal Interrogation

The fluorescent lights of the Boston Logan International Airport international arrivals terminal buzzed with an incessant, high-pitched whine that grated against Emily’s already frayed nerves. She stood near Pillar 14, clutching her phone so tightly her fingertips had turned a chalky, translucent white. The ambient roar of rolling luggage, multilingual chatter, and distant flight announcements faded into white noise, swallowed entirely by the gravity of the words echoing through her earpiece.
“Federal investigation?” Emily repeated, the phrase tasting like ash and iron on her tongue. “Logan, you must have the wrong person. I’m currently sitting in a regional terminal three hundred miles away. I didn't even make it onto a plane this morning. My brother... my family destroyed my papers last night.”
On the other end of the line, Logan Vance let out a low, weary exhale. The sound of shifting papers rustled against the microphone, followed by the distinct click of a computer mouse.
“Miss Carter, I don’t make mistakes when it comes to federal security flags,” Logan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the unmistakable weight of authority. “Thirty minutes ago, an individual walked up to the international transfer desk attempting to check in for a transatlantic flight using your exact identification credentials, your full name, and a digitized copy of your Harvard Medical School acceptance profile.”
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her mind raced backward, tearing through the events of the previous night. Tyler standing by the counter with the lighter. The curling, blackened edges of her acceptance letter, her passport, her travel itinerary. The way her mother had folded her arms with that smug, untouchable grin.
*“You’ll be back within a week, begging for forgiveness.”*
They hadn't just burned her papers to stop her from leaving. They had copied them. Or worse—Tyler had stolen her digital backups from her cloud storage before resetting her laptop last week. But why would Tyler try to board a flight to Europe or anywhere else using *her* credentials? Tyler had his own driver's license, his own messy, criminal-adjacent life. Unless... unless the passport and travel documents weren't just hers.
“Who was it?” Emily demanded, her voice cutting through the terminal noise with a sudden, razor-sharp edge. “Who was arrested?”
“The local transport police picked up a male subject carrying a forged passport matching your demographic data, coupled with a high-priority financial fraud alert linked to a series of offshore accounts,” Logan explained smoothly. “When officers detained him and ran the biometric scan associated with the Harvard scholarship fund routing number, your legal name flagged instantly in our system as the primary beneficiary. The arresting officers want to know why a twenty-two-year-old incoming medical student is apparently connected to a half-million-dollar international money-laundering scheme currently under surveillance by the Department of Justice.”
Emily staggered backward, her hip bumping against a stainless-steel trash receptacle. The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis.
A half-million-dollar money-laundering scheme?
Her mind flashed back to Tyler’s sudden, inexplicable influx of cash six months ago—the sleek new car he had been driving for two weeks before it mysteriously vanished, the designer clothes, the expensive dinners he posted on social media while their parents begged local shopkeepers for grocery credit. Tyler wasn't just a low-level scammer running small-time cryptocurrency grifts. He had been using her identity—her pristine, unblemished academic record, her clean social security number, her spotless legal standing—as a front for something catastrophically large.
And when they burned her papers last night, it wasn't just an act of spite to crush her dreams. It was a panic move. They realized that once Emily arrived at Harvard, federal background checks and institutional financial auditing would inevitably uncover the fraudulent accounts tied to her name. By destroying her physical ability to leave, they thought they could trap her at home, silence her, and force her to take the fall if the house of cards ever collapsed.
“Miss Carter?” Logan’s voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. “Are you still there? The federal agents handling this case are moving the suspect to a private interrogation suite right now. They requested a direct line to you immediately because your admission file was flagged as a potential identity theft victim—or worse, an active accomplice.”
Emily’s shock instantly crystallized into a cold, lethal fury. The grief of losing her medical school dream evaporated, replaced by an absolute, unyielding desire for total destruction. They didn't just want to keep her down; they had built a digital and legal prison around her name, weaponizing her future to protect their golden boy's criminal empire.
“I am not an accomplice,” Emily said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and steady that Logan paused on the other end. “And I am not a victim. I am the sole rightful owner of that identity, and I am currently looking at a bus schedule. How fast can a federal transport marshal secure a secure video link to my location?”
Logan chuckled softly—a dry, appreciative sound. “I like your spine, Miss Carter. Stay right where you are near the central information desk. Don't board any buses. I’m transferring this call directly to Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI's financial crimes division. Let’s see how fast your family’s little house of cards collapses when the feds show up at their front door.”
Before Emily could answer, the line clicked, and a deep, authoritative voice replaced Logan’s.
“Miss Carter? This is Special Agent Vance. I’m looking at a man in an interrogation room right now who claims his name is Tyler Carter, and he’s swearing up and down that you gave him full permission to use your identity to stash offshore capital. Care to comment?”
Emily stared out the massive glass windows of the airport terminal, watching the first pale streaks of dawn bleed across the gray Boston skyline. A fierce, predatory smile touched the corners of her lips.
“My brother doesn't even know how to spell embezzlement, Agent Vance,” Emily said clearly, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Tell him I’m on my way to Boston. And tell him not to answer any questions until I get there to watch him sink.”
