Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room

The interrogation room was cold, sterile, and smelled faintly of floor wax and stale air. A massive two-way mirror occupied the entire length of the far wall, reflecting the harsh fluorescent glare overhead. Tyler Carter sat slumped in a bolted-down metal chair, his expensive designer jacket wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wide with a manic, cornered panic.

When the heavy steel door clicked open, Tyler jerked his head up, expecting his defense attorney or a federal prosecutor. Instead, he saw Emily walking into the room, followed closely by Special Agent Marcus Vance.

Tyler’s jaw dropped. For a second, he looked like he had seen a ghost. Then, the familiar, venomous sneer twisted his features, and he slammed his cuffed hands down onto the metal table with a deafening crash.

“You!” Tyler screamed, leaping halfway out of his seat before a federal guard forcefully shoved him back down. “What is she doing in here? This is a federal facility! She’s the one! She did all of it! She set me up!”

Emily didn't flinch. She pulled out the chair opposite him, sat down with agonizing slowness, and folded her hands neatly on the tabletop. She looked at Tyler the way a senior surgeon looks at a fascinating, highly predictable pathology specimen under a microscope.

“Nice jacket, Tyler,” Emily said smoothly, her voice calm and level. “Is that the one you bought with the sixty grand you embezzled from the medical supply LLC you opened under my social security number in March?”

Tyler’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. “Shut up! You lying little rat! You gave me your ID! You said I could use your credit to help with my business! You’re just as guilty as I am!”

“Is that what you told the agents?” Emily tilted her head, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips. “Funny. Because the IP logs from the bank servers show every single transaction was initiated from your personal laptop, connected to your apartment’s dedicated Wi-Fi router, using geo-location data that places you in Boston while I was sitting in a public library three hundred miles away studying for my organic chemistry finals.”

Tyler’s eyes darted wildly toward the two-way mirror, desperately searching for a lifeline that wasn't there. “Mom and Dad will tell them! They know you were in on it! They’ll say you helped us!”

“Mom and Dad are currently answering questions from federal marshals in our kitchen,” Emily replied softly, leaning forward across the table. “And let me guess, Tyler—they aren't backing up your story. Because when Mom and Dad realized that federal prison doesn't come with cable television or free meals, they folded like cheap lawn chairs. They already handed over the bank records showing the wire transfers deposited directly into their joint account.”

Tyler froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him a sickly, pasty gray. His lower lip quivered slightly. “No... no, they wouldn't... they love me. I’m the one who takes care of them.”

“You’re the one who dragged them down into your criminal garbage heap,” Emily corrected, her voice dropping into a chilling, authoritative whisper. “And last night, when you burned my scholarship papers, you thought you were locking me in a cage so I could take the fall for your corporate fraud. You didn't realize that by destroying my physical identity documents, you forced the system to run an automated audit on my entire profile—an audit that exposed your entire network in less than an hour.”

Tyler slumped back into his chair, his bravado completely shattered, replaced by the pathetic, sniveling cowardice of a bully who had finally run out of targets. “Emmy... please. Please. We’re family. You can’t let them put me away for twenty years. If I have a felony record, my whole life is over. I won't survive federal prison.”

Emily slowly stood up, smoothing down the front of her simple, practical shirt. She looked down at her brother with absolute, bottomless indifference.

“My life was supposed to start tomorrow at Harvard Medical School,” Emily said quietly. “You tried to burn it to the ground. You stole my future, my hard work, my name, and my peace of mind. And now, you get to watch me walk out of this building, wipe your existence completely out of my life, and leave you to rot in a federal cell.”

She turned away, walking toward the heavy steel door.

“Emily! Wait! Emmy, please!” Tyler wailed, slamming his fists against the table as the guards pulled him back. “Don't leave me here! What about Mom and Dad? What about our family?!”

Emily paused with her hand on the cold steel handle. She didn't look back.

“We aren't family, Tyler,” she said softly. “We never were.”

She pulled the door open and stepped out into the bright, clean corridor, leaving the shouting behind her in the dark.
