Chapter 15 - The Highway Chase

By Thursday afternoon, the dragnet was closing in.
Margaret wasn't one to sit passively behind a desk while justice took its slow, bureaucratic course. Accompanied by her private security lead, a retired federal marshal named Vance, Margaret sat in the back of a black armored SUV as they tracked the live GPS coordinates provided by the state troopers along Interstate 5 heading north toward Bellingham.
"We're three miles behind her," Vance said, his eyes glued to a tactical tracking tablet mounted on the dashboard. "State police have set up a rolling roadblock near exit 252. She’s driving a stolen silver sedan rented under her mother’s maiden name."
Margaret looked out the tinted window as pine trees and gray highway signs blurred past in the misty afternoon drizzle. Her mind drifted back to the Highlands of Scotland—to the vast, quiet lochs and the peaceful wind that had briefly touched her soul before she was dragged back into this sordid mess of greed and betrayal. She had thought she was done with drama, but life had one final chapter to write for Jessica Vance.
"Is Kevin cooperating?" Margaret asked quietly without turning around.
"Completely broken," Vance replied. "He spent the morning at the precinct breaking down in front of federal investigators. He gave them the passcode to Jessica's personal laptop, which contains emails detailing her systematic plan to milk your trust fund dry and then divorce him once her boutique went public."
Margaret let out a slow breath. Poor Kevin. He had traded his mother's unconditional love and a secure, respectable future for a vapid social climber who viewed him as nothing more than an ATM with a pulse. Now, he was left with nothing—no wife, no money, no career, and a mountain of legal debt that would take him decades to pay off.
"She's exiting the highway!" Vance suddenly barked, his demeanor instantly shifting from casual driver to tactical operative. "She’s taking the off-ramp toward the Blaine border crossing! She's panicking!"
The SUV surged forward, its powerful engine roaring as Vance navigated the traffic with military precision. Through the rain-streaked windshield, Margaret caught sight of a silver sedan swerving erratically across two lanes of local traffic, desperately trying to bypass a line of halted cars waiting at the border inspection gate.
Sirens wailed in the distance. Red and blue lights flashed against the gray, overcast sky as three unmarked state police cruisers closed in from behind, boxing the silver sedan against a chain-link fence near a abandoned fruit stand.
The silver car slammed on its brakes, tires smoking against the wet asphalt as it spun ninety degrees before coming to a violent halt against a concrete barrier.
Margaret’s SUV pulled up fifty feet away, blocking any potential escape route.
The doors of the police cruisers flew open. Armed state troopers stepped out, their weapons drawn, shouting commands into the damp air. "Driver, turn off the engine! Put your hands where we can see them! Step out of the vehicle slowly!"
Inside the silver sedan, the driver's door pushed open a few inches. Jessica stumbled out onto the wet pavement, her hair wild, wearing an oversized designer hoodie and sweatpants, looking nothing like the untouchable queen bee who had slapped Margaret in front of two hundred and fifty guests six months ago.
She looked around wildly, realizing she was completely surrounded. Her eyes landed on the black SUV. Through the tinted window, she caught sight of Margaret sitting calmly inside, watching her with cool, detached authority.
Jessica let out a feral, desperate scream, shaking her fist toward Margaret’s car. "This is your fault! You ruined my life! You witch!"
Two state troopers rushed forward, tackling Jessica gently against the hood of the patrol car as the steel cuffs snapped loudly around her wrists.

Margaret rolled down her window just an inch, letting the cool, damp breeze carry the sound of the handcuffs clicking shut. She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply watched as the woman who had tried to destroy her was led away in disgrace.
