Chapter 28 - The Road to Inverness

The rental car—a sturdy, slate-gray Land Rover—handled the narrow, winding Highland roads with ease as Margaret drove north from Edinburgh toward the rugged heart of Inverness. The landscape was breathtaking, a dramatic tapestry of emerald hills, ancient stone walls, and deep, brooding lochs shrouded in wispy blankets of morning mist. The air smelled of wet peat, pine, and wild heather, crisp and invigorating against her face as she rolled the window down a fraction of an inch. As she approached the small village near the chapel, she spotted Daniel’s rental car parked outside a charming, whitewashed country inn with a thatched roof. She pulled in beside him, cutting the engine just as the heavy wooden front door swung open and Daniel stepped out, followed closely by Chloe. Chloe looked radiant, her face flushed with natural excitement, her blonde hair tied back loosely with a silk ribbon. Without hesitation, Chloe rushed down the gravel path and threw her arms around Margaret in a fierce, genuine embrace. "You made it! We were so worried your flight would be delayed in London," Chloe said, pulling back with a beaming smile. "It went without a hitch," Margaret replied, returning the warm hug before looking over at Daniel, who stepped up to wrap both of them in a broad, affectionate bear hug. "Welcome to the Highlands, Mom," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "It's about time we had a wedding worth remembering." They spent the afternoon sitting by a crackling peat fire in the inn’s cozy parlor, sharing stories over hot tea and buttery shortbread, surrounded by the quiet, timeless beauty of the Scottish countryside. For the first time in years, the family dynamic felt entirely natural, free of pretense, obligation, or toxic expectations.
