Chapter 23 - The Tightening Noose

Emily didn't flinch under his psychological assault, but I saw the slight muscle twitch in her jaw—the residual tremor of a trauma response that years of therapy were still working to untangle. Yet, instead of retreating, she took half a step forward, the beam of her flashlight never wavering from his chest.

"You didn't come here to talk about the trial, Arthur," Emily said, her tone cutting through his bravado like a scalpel. "You didn't come here to win me back, because you are incapable of love. You came here because the federal asset forfeiture office seized your last remaining accounts this morning. You’re broke. You’re ruined. And you wanted to see if you could destroy one last thing before the marshals finally drag you to a federal penitentiary."

Arthur’s smug expression faltered for the first time. The mask slipped, revealing the terrified, cornered narcissist hiding beneath the tailored suit. His breathing hitched slightly, his hands twitching inside his coat pockets.

"You talk about assets," Arthur hissed, his voice dropping an octave, turning venomous and sharp. "You talk about money like it was mine alone. But you forgot the most important detail, Emily. You signed the pre-nuptial addendum the night before our scheduled wedding. Even if the court voided the primary contract due to your 'fragile state,' that addendum contains a clause assigning all intellectual property rights of your early architectural designs directly to my holding firm. Designs you created while living under my roof. Designs that are currently funding your entire new life."

My heart stopped. I knew nothing about a pre-nuptial addendum. Emily had told me every detail of the legal separation and the subsequent trial, but she had hidden this terrifying piece of the puzzle to protect me from worrying. I looked sharply at my daughter, seeing the pale realization wash over her face.

"That clause was signed under duress," Emily retorted, though the absolute certainty in her voice had wavered just a fraction. "Every lawyer on our legal team confirmed it was legally null and void the moment the abuse documentation was entered into evidence."

"Lawyers can be bought, Emily. Judges can be manipulated. Or..." Arthur smiled a slow, sickeningly sweet smile, sliding his right hand slowly out of his overcoat pocket. In his grip was not a weapon, but a small, heavy black flash drive. "...they can be bypassed entirely if the original, physical hard copies of those signed agreements are recovered and destroyed before the morning filing deadline at the county clerk's office."

My instincts screamed. I didn't wait for him to finish his sentence. I lunged across the concrete floor like a sprinter leaving the starting blocks, bridging the distance between us before Arthur could react to my sudden movement.
