Chapter 4 - The Quiet Christmas

The next morning, Christmas Day sunlight poured through our living room windows, glinting off the colorful wrapping paper scattered across the floor.
Hallie sat on the rug wearing matching flannel pajama pants we had bought together the week before, laughing as she unwrapped a long-desired art set I had managed to track down. Her cheeks were rosy, her eyes were bright, and the shadow of the previous night seemed to have lifted entirely, replaced by the genuine, carefree joy of an eleven-year-old child who felt safe in her own home.
"Mom, look! Markers with brush tips!" she beamed, holding up the box. "Can we paint later?"

My phone remained completely silent on the side table, save for a supportive text message from Mrs. Bennett wishing us a merry Christmas and checking in on Hallie. I replied with a heartfelt thank-you, knowing that without her intervention, I might have remained completely in the dark while my daughter suffered in silence.
