Chapter 8 - The Judge’s Chambers

Two weeks later, we stood before Family Court Judge Hernandez in a closed chambers hearing.

Judge Hernandez was a no-nonsense magistrate with iron-gray hair and a reputation for swiftly penalizing parental alienation. She had reviewed all the filings, the neighbor's affidavits, the text logs, and the deposition transcripts.

She didn't waste any time.

"Mr. Davis," Judge Hernandez said, her voice sharp and authoritative as she looked across the desk at Peter, who sat alone since Brooke was barred from participating in the custody adjustments. "The court takes matters of emotional safety and custodial equity extremely seriously. A child going between two households must feel protected, valued, and respected in both—not used as a prop for humiliation or family aesthetics."

Peter nodded miserably. "Yes, Your Honor."

"Based on the evidence presented, the current joint physical custody arrangement is hereby modified," Judge Hernandez announced, picking up her heavy black pen. "Primary physical custody is awarded solely to the mother, Rachel Vance. Peter Davis will receive supervised weekend visitation on alternating Saturdays, to be conducted at an approved family center, effective immediately. Furthermore, mandatory family counseling is ordered for Mr. Davis, to be completed before any unsupervised visitation can be petitioned."

She looked up, fixing Peter with a piercing stare.

"If I hear so much as a whisper that your current spouse has attempted to contact, disparage, or marginalize Hallie again, I will suspend your visitation rights indefinitely. Do I make myself clear?"

"Crystal clear, Your Honor," Peter whispered.

As we walked out of the courthouse into the crisp winter sunshine, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that I hadn't realized I had been carrying for years. The constant anxiety of wondering what was happening behind closed doors when Hallie was away was finally gone.

Hallie was safe. And more importantly, she knew it.
